Default My Catch Pan - Easy to build

Ok, i know a lot of people have been waiting till last minute to deal with the catch pan for NHRA. This includes me. Today I finally decided to make one.
I started with a piece of sheet aluminum, folded a diagonal for stability and center puddling. Then, I cut 2" nothes in the corners, then bent up the sides, riveted and sealed the corners. I made Z brackets to attach to the frame. In the front, it bolts to where the dirt shield would go. In the back, i self tapped it to the subframe.

When the car is jacked up, the lip hits the lower control arms, when its on the ground, it has about 1.5-2" of clearance (plenty to allow for wheel hop). Here are the pics.

Also, i have 3.5" of ground clearance still.

The rules state that the lips of the catch pan needs to curve inwards.

if you look at the pics close, you'll see the lips cove inward just a bit.

sheet of aluminum laying around the shop (maybe $35-40 worth), small 4x18" piece of 16ga sheet, maybe $5-10 worth, and 42 rivets.

add about 2 hours labor

Is that 3.5" of clearance with slicks at race pressure?

two questions.

1. isn't this only gonna be required starting in 2008?
2. Also, does it not have to be SFI approved? So we can't merely go make our own?

-looks good.

1-this year its required for all sportsman races. well, this or a blanket, but since there is no blanket for hondas, not much else you can do.

2-no SFI required (as of now)

good to know. I thought I saw in an update that the pans werent gonna be required till next season due to the limited supply of manufacturers actually producing them right now.

That's great until you have to clear a 3.5" or 4" DP....

unless it has fireproof absorbent lining inside its not good!

yeah, you serious? i had no problems this weekend at tech. no where in the rules does it say anything about lining. nothing. You'd hear quite a bitching from me if they tried to say it had to have **** not mentioned anywhere outside of their brain.
