edit: tried to strip them and now the paint wont come all the way off. just left it all rubbery like
forgot we had this forum....
haven't done this in awhile but do you have to strip the paint off the rims or can i just scuff the surface with like 320 grit then paint over it, no primer?

I don't use adhesion promoter on the wheels I paint, i just use the duplicolor whjeel paint then clearcoat.
You can just use 180 then 320 grit dry or wet and sand the **** out the wheels like me, which enables you to get a smoother surface to paint on.
Although it time consuming and a little more costly... it has always worked for me.

here's what i posted in the other thread
i waited 10 or so minutes with the aircraft on there and it was around 80º out. the rims were new when i painted over them the first time and came out perfect but i wanted to repaint them another color. when i started to paint over the old paint it started reacting weird so i stripped them. it only took off what i painted over it, but not the orginal.

Airplane stripper should have took it right off. Don't use the stripper in hot places because the stripper will quickly evaporate, and use a scraper to scrape off what the stripper took off. Do not sand, you will be wasting a lot of sand paper, plus always wash what is going to be painted after using the stripper. Hope this help. Forgot to mention, apply an even single coat of stripper on the item that is being strip this will allow the stripper to work effectively.

alright if your paint is rubbery, you should be able to scrape it off....and if you know you cant get that paint completely off then just scrape what you can while its rubbery, and let it dry and sand it and just hit it with duplicolor wheel paint....which is great btw.

i cant scrape it off with a rubber scraper but i can with like my finger nails...i think a metal scrape might scratch up the bare rim.
i'll try spraying it again then use a power washer?

dude use a razor blade or something.....dont worry about the rims....theyll be fine as long as you dont take the paint off with a hammer. Even if there are a couple scratches left over it wont matter because the primer and paint will cover it up......what grit sand paper are you using???
