check all the connections on the starter to make sure they are all hooked up

I'm betting on your starter. Your motor will start with the stock grounds, so your friend is an idiot for trying to tell you you need more of them.

Take your starter to Autozone and have them test it. It cost all of $0.00 ....

The ground thing is myth and truth... It's an enigma! Muahahahaha.
Anyway, I've had motors that after install wouldn't start. Turn the key and the dash lights would go dim. Turn it off and back on, try to start it, same thing. Adding a ground made it pop right over. They get corroded and don't conduct well over the years.
Is the starter making any noice when you turn it to start? A click? A loud click? Anything?
It could be as simple as the spade connector slipping off starter signal connector.
Don't waste your time replacing anything until you check that.
