Default what you got? K-swap or Boosted D17

ok i want opinions on what many people think and have done

D17: did you guys mod your engine? add turbo? was it worth it? do you enjoy the consequences of your mods? do you think you should have Swaped?

Swaped K: ok.... did you think you spent your money wiseles? was it worth the ammount you paid for? do you think its better to boost a D17?

U spelled it right... Vtec.... Then wrong... Vtech...

I would just keep the LX head, and turbo it.

i own a non-vtec D17 em2

i spent around $3,500 for everything computer, tune, turbo, etc.

im hittin 13.4 at 9lbs of boost with a max boost setting of 18 lbs.

im really happy with my set up because i got more power with less money spent.

yes, the K would have more potential but with more potential would mean more money.

for a faster and better route, i'd go with a D17 turbo.

not bad

oh yeah, i would say dont worry about swapping for a vtec head....more work than it is worth. What are you doing with the car? I assume it will probably be a DD and it might see the track on weekends maybe? If that is the case just turbo it and save some money for in case the D blows up.

I heard somewhere that it's actually better to run NON-vtec when turbo...

...Because the VTEC cam is heavier?

Isn't that why companies sell VTEC Killer Cams for turbo applications?

I might be wrong.

probably because Vtec's are higher compression.

Vtec is better regardless. if u want high boost, vtec+low comp pistions = wonders.

my friend ran an 11.91 with a stock block GSR-T in a 1989 Civic hatch @ 15psi.

lets see a b18b-T run that.. probably wont happen

Here's the scoop on the vtec for d17's. Alot of people will say, go with non vtec because the vtec is actually vtec-e which means you're only operating 3 valves per cylinder until vtec kicks in which kills power in the low-mid rpm range. That's the beauty of standalone, set that joker at 1500 rpm and it will eat up the boost. As far as the cam being heavier, if it is, its not enough to outweigh the ability to run a real power making crower cam.

Anyways, I went all out on my d17, its got just about every power making part you could want. No way would I be making this much power on the amount I spent if I had done a k swap.

first do all of your research before looking into parts.

most kits are crap, so you'd be better of piecing your own kit together.

andyman ... but what is up with the graph? why does the torque and hp numbers cross at 7K instead of 5,250 rpms??? just curious.

to the OP, how much power are u lookin to make, what are your goals with the car? tell us and that will help us give u better advice on whether to turbo or go K. sometimes different things are better for different situations.

They don't actually cross at 7200, they really cross at 5200, my tuner just skews the torque line to match the power line. Just look at the numbers on opposite sides of the axis on the graph, they're different, not the same scale.

ok. so ive done some research. ive looked at what every turbo kit gives and i looked for the most parts one kit can give. so i have decided to buy brand name parts for each piece of the kit... you know???

like instead of buying a kit. buy the parts require for a kit ^_^... ive done some looking around and also looked at the Turbo thread in the FAQ section. ive wondering what kind of Turbo to get... T3 maybe? i just want a kick to my daily driver ^_^ eventually when i decide to get my EK or CRX and make that my mod car ill still have something fun to drive ^_^

Yep, I put down 247 whp on a bone stock d17a1.

If you just want a bolt on kit, get a basic tsi or dezod kit, bolt it on, get some decent injectors and tune with kpro.
