question! Manual driving
kinda new at this.... so i was wondering if it ok to press the clutch pedal often when ur driving, i mean like i press the clutch every chance i got. When i slow down i press the clutch b4 i press the brake.
To answer your question.. Yes, you can press the clutch in whenever you stop, or you can downshift/rev match and use the tranny to slow your car down. Thats a lil advanced (it seems) for you.. So for the meantime, Just press the clutch and use the brake alone to slow you down.

Everybody has to learn man.. Not all of us had parents/someone to teach us how to drive a stick, so don't you guys go being a d*ck to somebody who's learning and obviously doesn't have a teacher.
Pple take for granted at how much skill it takes to shift without anybody knowing. I pride myself on my shifting. If you close your eyes and plug your ears, all you can feel is the take off. Never feel one shift
In my circle of friend, I'm everybody's " 5 speed/stick shift Daddy"
Ride with somebody who doesn't know how to drive a stick good and you appreciate the skill REAL quick.
ON that note, practice makes perfect man. Have fun
ANd if you can find a buddy to help you out, that would be a good idea.

well put
Only press the clutch when you want to change gears.
Its okay to press the clutch down, but NEVER HOLD IT.
If i see a red light ahead and know it wont turn green, and im coasting in 4th @ 35mph, ill just let it coast until 1.5k rpm and then hit the clutch. if you put in neutral @ 35mph and still got a way to the red light, the car will still be going fast and youll wear down your brake pads faster.
i hope your not pressing the clutch and not shifting into another gear, then releasing the clutch...your puttting stress on the transmission

Yes your so right, learning stick is not easy as everyone think. Well the concept is easy but mastering it is not. It took me a month and a week to master 1-2 without any jerking. I had to figure out how to do it myself, no one helped me. this is my second month driving stick and still cant down downshift properly

I understand this and I was at that stage once, but posting in a make specific forum is NOT the best place to learn. Why not ask the person who's teaching you to drive? It seems the more appropriate place to get information on the driving basics.
Sorry, I wasn't really trying to be a dick, but to answer the original poster; yes, it is ok to do what you're asking. I've been driving a manual for 7 or so years now and I still do that.

I know this isn't your situation, but here's a quick lesson. The one thing that you definitely don't want to do while driving a car with a manual tranny, is to have a lazy foot placed on your clutch all the time when you drive. This is when you are too lazy to lift your foot and keep it off the clutch pedal while driving.
Yes, some uneducated people will actually drive all day with there foot sitting on the clutch. What this does is partially disengage the clutch, thereby causing slippage with increased clutch disk wear and heat. This will wear a clutch out very quickly and possibly cause problems with the flywheel.
I had a buddy from work who's wife was a boozer. She would drive with her foot always sitting on the clutch pedal. The clutch in their brand new car only lasted 30K miles. No wonder he is divorced now.

i will personally sometimes drive with my foot on the clutch but not very heavy, and i know it is not wearing it out. the first inch of play that ever car has is safe, all it is is a little spring tension in the pedal assembly. i check my foot every time i put it on the clutch though to make sure im not putting much pressure on it. as far as pushing the pedal goes, it is fine as long as you don't hold it down for extened periods of time, just take it out of gear and take your foot off. i personally taught myself the up shifting part of stick in a day and down shifting in about a week. as long as you understand the concept of clutch engagement, engine speed, and shifting, it should come pretty easily. keep in mind: it is simple and do not get over whelmed....you can always coast in neutral.
driving down the road you have your foot simply resting on the clutch pedal, not pushing on it, just resting. i don't do it all the time but i don't pull my foot off imediately if i catch myself doing it. then problem is more consistent with people who put more pressure on the pedal. just my take
i heard that you grind your clutch when you hold it down for long periods of time. i either throw it into neutral and slow down then clutch and shift back to the gear needed to keep my car going. or i just brake and then gas to see if my rev is low, if it is, then i down shift to the apporpriate gear
