Default Widest tire?

Hey guys, SO i have a 98 civic coupe ex. Its lowered on tein s-techs and i am wondering about tire width. I have 17" motegi rims and right now i have 205/40/17's. I am assuming ill need to roll the feders to get wide but whats the best you think i can do? (without rubbing)

just get a better, stickier tire. wider does not necessarily mean u will have better grip.

It really depends what is your budget!

If you want best bang for the buck then the kumho SPT is for you. The SPT has good dry performance, excellent wet traction and a great threadlife.

If money is not really a factor and you want the best all round tire out the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is for you. The Goodyear has excellent dry and wet performance and great threadlife.

Stick with 205/40-17. You won't have to worry about rubbing or about rolling your fenders. And they won't make your car accelerate slower like larger tires will. If you want better performance, get better, stickier tires.

I agree, but there are a couple more choices I would add to the mix.

1. If you care ONLY about dry traction, get the Falken Azenis RT-615 in 205/40-17. It's the stickiest street tire you can get. Downsides include rapid treadwear (10-12K miles treadlife is typical) and so-so performance in rain (probably important in BC, eh?). $93/tire at Vulcan.

2. If you want outstanding dry traction and wet traction and long treadlife (25-40K miles), then get the Goodyear F1 GS-D3. A bit more money, but should last 2-3 times as long as the Azenis, so the cost per mile is less. The Tire Rack has the 80W rated version in 205/40-17 on closeout for $79/tire, which is an awesome deal; the ones with the 84W rating are $125/tire.

3. If you want pretty good dry traction and excellent wet traction, combined with a low purchase price and long treadlife (25-40K miles), then get the Kumho SPT. $60/tire at the Tire Rack.

4. All of the above are summer tires, suitable for use in moderate to warm temperatures, and should not be used in snow. If you don't have another set of tires for winter use, and you have to use these tires for snow and winter as well as the rest of the year, then you should get all-season tires. All-seasons won't perform as well in winter as a winter tire, and they won't do as well the rest of the year as a summer tire, but if you have to use the same tires in all weather conditions, you need all-seasons. If you need all-seasons, I recommend the Kumho Ecsta ASX for $60/tire at the Tire Rack.

Wonderful thanks for all the help! My civi lives in houston tx so snow isnt an issue . I think i may take a look into the kuhmos, they seem like pretty popular and decent tires. Its just ever since i boosted my car there just spin spin spin. I try to feather the throttle but my old falken 512s just don't cut it.

The SPT is a good tire for the money. However, if this is for a high-power application, I would spend a little more for the F1 GS-D3. And the closeout price on the F1 GS-D3 isn't that much more than the SPT, anyway.

If you decide to go for the SPT, I see that tiretrends.com in BC has them for CAD116 each. I don't know if that makes up for the shipping and other charges to get them from the States.
