b16 timing belt tensioner, should I replace??
I got my b16 back up and running, and now after snaping a T Belt in my 1.6i-16 Im wondering if I should replace the tensioner in the hatch, I replaced the belt when I put the engine in (had about 90k miles on it, has about 6k more now) so should I replace the tensioner or not? what happens if it goes bad? Does it fail slowly or what? Thanks
Here's how I handle the tensioner. Every used Honda I buy, I replace the tensioner on when I do the timing belt for the first time, unless the previous owner can prove to me that he/she has done it within a reasonable date.
I replace the tensioner every other timing belt change after that (180,000 miles). I still roll the tensioner by hand and visually inspect it on the times I don't intend on replacing it. If it feels gritty or the dust shield is chewed up, I replace it.
I have never had one fail, but if it locks up, it would probably cause enough friction to melt/break/destroy the belt and then the engine.
