Default D16 crank pulley

I just had a thought...

My D16Y8 crank pulley weighs a TON. I know that my old D16A6 crank pulley is much much lighter (at least half the weight)... My question is, can I change them over adn use the A6 crank pulley on the Y8? I know that they do not directly bolt on, but can I change what's underneath it to accept the A6 pulley ? (I haven't really taken a look under there yet). The reason I would do this is that we all know that lighter rotational weight = more power and longevity on parts... what do you all think?? Would the timing belt still work on my Y8??

The crank pulleys weigh a ton for a reason, they are a two-piece construction with a harmonic balancer built in. This reduces vibration at high-RPM's saving your oil pump and main bearings. The Y8's have a bad rep with main bearings already so if you want to keep this engine for a while it would be best to leave the crank pulley alone. If you want to remove rotational inertia and mass, first remove it by replacing the flywheel with a light-weight aluminum or chromoly unit. Always respect the work of Honda engineers, they do things for a reason.

No, I think that was a 0.01$ writeup.

Ok, that sounds pretty reasonable. I guess I'll just leave well enough alone Thanks for the input.

If that were the case, why would the A6 pulley be so much lighter...? The logic doesn't follow; the same Honda engineers designed the A6, albeit 7-8 years earlier

is their anyway of making sure that you have the right pulley for your motor?

A6 crank pulley is only 2 pounds lighter. The A6 and Z6 blocks have a reputation of being beefier than the Y8. Taking a pound of the flywheel is about the same as taking 3+ pounds off the crank pulley because of larger diameter and rotational inertia of the flywheel. There are more gains to be had by going light on the flywheel. According to SCC, AEBS's Paulus Lee actually goes out of his way to find the heaviest Honda crank pulleys for his race engines. I guess he doesn't like to tear down his race engines more than once a year.

When the crank pully started seperating on my D16, I tried re-placing it with the lighter pully off an HF. VERY BAD MISTAKE...... The vibration that I picked-up, would rattle the fillings out of your teeth.

All Honda B series and D series motors are internally balanced. The crank pulley does not do any harmonic balancing like you would see on a chevy 350 or something.

besides all that, i know my D16Z6 alt. and dx pulley...the belts groves are different. so i know in my case i would have had to use the old dx alt. as well. this may have been a stupid responce, but it just poped in my head because i remember putting on the alt belt when i put my engine in, i had picked up the old dx belt instead of the D16 belt, and the grooves were diff.

Why not just run a Unorthodox Racing pulley and save even more wieght? On a D16a6, the pulley is solid steel, 1 piece. The oil pump is the harmonic balancer on that motor. I've been racing for a year now with a UR pulley and its great.

Enough of this nonsense.

My response was not directed at you Hayasa. I guess you can weigh the crank pulley. According to Unorthodox, the Z6 weighs about 4 pounds 3 ounces. If it weighs about that much and everything fits I don't think there will be a problem.

you have NO CLUE about the very BAD crank harmonics of a 4 cylinder inline motor.

ESP. a long stroke 1.6L Honda motor.

Yes, I've played with a few SBC's, SBF's, along with Honda Motors.

The B motors with their bigger bore/shorter stroke can get away without the dampener on the crank pulley.

D16's cannot.

Fill out the Sport Compact survey here if you want a REAL performance lightweight crank pulley w/ silicone damper:
