TL Transmissons
I know there has been numerous complaints and problems about TL tranmissions. I am looking to buy a TL within the next couple weeks but I dont want to buy one that will give me tranny problems in the future. Can someone give me a little insight as to what year this problem and how acura deals with these problems....does the car still have to be under warranty or do they replace it if there is a problem? thanks for the input guys
make sure the car is covered under the acura extended warrenty. you can do that by looking at the VIN and asking Acura customer care if your car is covered for 7yr, 100k or something like that. If not, don't get it. Mine isn't. sucks
the 99-03..they get messed up if you're out of luck. haha. just check first man. at least you are researching before you buy. I didn't do that, now I have a tl that's not covered, so now I have to buy a warrenty for it cuz it cost about 3 to 4 g's to fix
Make sure its covered and also check to see if it has had the updated tranny (Feb. '05) already installed. I bought an '03 TL-S last fall and before I took it home the selling dealership took it to Acura and they checked it out and replaced the old tranny with the updated version. I have had nothing but happy motoring since.

I think the updated trans is the same version used in the 04+ cars, not sure though reports of trans failures after feb 05 are way down compared to befoer. Updating the Trans Control Unit really takes the performace right out of the car though....

could be or it could be tstat stuck open causing engine to think car isn't warmed up and unlocking torqueconverter and locking it again when engine gets hot...
yea seen a lot of them no mil or vsa codes stored.
sounds like a faulty tranmission save your self some money if the they call you about the front motor mount i would do it and save some labor.

its a factory warranty that you purchase when the car is new they normally cover the car for about 100k miles. but since the car has a transmission extension it goes beyond that.

I noticed that you got a 03 TL type S. Register your car on owner's link and it will tell you if your car is covered under the 7 year 9 month or 109K warranty (it might be listed as 7 year 100K but a recent CA lawsuit settlement extended the warranty by 9 months and 9K miles)
If it is not covered and you have maint records of your car, there is a GOOD possibility Acura will pick up the tab for you but you gotta contact Acura Customer Service AFTER you get the diag from the dealer.

the service manager at the dealer has the power to make that call not customer service. i see this every day at the dealer and we good will warranty so many transmission's a week and we have done quit a few that are past the 109k mark as a good will warranty only the service manager or dpsm can make it happen.

it's actually the dpsm that makes things happen. hate the over 1hr warranty thing and then the service manager has to contact the dpsm.

very true but our dealer has some major strings and it has not been a problem for us.i just did a cd player good will warranty on a 01 mdx with 110k free99 for the customer. but hey when your a percision team dealer their is lots of perks.
yea so i just dropped my tl off at the dealership and it was the tranny after all. i am wondering, do you think they will put the new base model tl tranny or the type-s since i do have a type-s?
they will put in an updated version of the same trans you have now. Good news is that they all seem to be golden after about feb 05.
the reason I told you to contact acura is some dealers will not even consider good will unless you have a case started with acura. Most of the dealers will take care of that for you but some won't.

Its funny that you say that. I recall several times you stating the opposite of your above statement. Unless you work at an Acura/Honda dealer you will NEVER know the amount of goodwill warranty work that goes on. From Odyssey trannies being replaced 20k miles after the warranty extension to an 04 Accord with nearly 60k miles, never been serviced, and Honda picked up the tab for the trans & labor. I could go on and on.

yea i talked to em later about what they would be replacing it with and they said that it's the same casing but everything inside (all the gears) and the PCM is brand new, which was apparently what was causing the problem.

Oh I dunno why I would tell someone to call Acura customer service......maybe it has to do with personal experience?
There are no less than 3 different Acura dealers where I live and each one will tell you something different.......
lets see how smart you really are.... please explain to me why a 2002 CL type S with a 52K on it would require 3 trans fluid changes wthin 11K miles when the car is only driven to work and back and not abused?
dealer #1 states it's normal
dealer #2 states that trans will fail but dealer cannot do anything until it actually quits
dealer #3 states call Acura customer service who states what dealer #2 states.
I am pretture sure when it gets to be like 90 outside the 3-4 snaping will return and at that point I will be able to get a new trans under "warranty"
I even had one dealer service manager try to tell me that my 2002 CL is not under any powertrain warranty.........even though it is.....(no salvage title and no voided warranty as I called Acura to verify in service date and warranty before I bought it).
