what is everyone using for engine diapers and trans/bell housing blankets - where are you guys getting them from summit/jegs? or is someone selling them for smaller 4 cyls. specifically

i'm assuming you dont have a Honda. I'm not sure what they have available for VWs. But the Honda B, H and D trans blankets, we stock are the Deist ones. Deist is also trying out different combos on how to do the Engine diaper so its not a universal one for sport compact. We're hoping to get a finalized one by summer, before its required next season.

Deist does make blankets custom made. you just have to either send a template or if close to them, bring the actual piece to be measured from.
its actually not for a VW its for a Mini Cooper - not sure what I will be able to do probably end up getting a hold of diest directly since its a very un common application ...thanks for the insight
kinda surpuirsed noone out there is doing them for the VW 4 cyl applications with as popular as they are

you need the following from what I hear.
1. Transmission blanket or Scatter shield
2. Full pan covering the trans and engine, pretty much the whole engine bay area.

well the trans blanket / scatter shield has to do with e.t. and mph not the oil downs.
next year for oil containment, a 2" lip pan and a diaper are manditory.

im assuming engine blanket is the same thing as diaper.
so we can either have a trans blanket or a scatter shield.

also, another option for VW guys. There are factory skid plates availble for most of the models since the MKII. I know Diesel geek makes them for MKIII and MKIV models. You could get one of those, plug up any holes in them and weld on the lips.
Being that the underbody of the MKIII is not much of a change from the MKII that would be a good start for the MKII folks.

Cost Effective = Pan --- doesn't work out
for a fabrication shop or person to build a catch pan for less than $400 you are undercutting yourself...i don't care how "universal" you are making it
...time = money for fabrication work
...and wtf does your car not run? haven't have had the last 5 months off with racing

the pan i made, especially the way i mounted it, would be impossible to duplicate unless i sent a tig welder with it. and your right on the cost effective part.
i have a few idea's....we will see. the 2 inch lip rule does NOT work well with 4 inch downpipes.

steve just put some new taller lips on his pan. he also called nhra tech, they allowed him to notch the lips to fit around the control arms and what not.

im going to have to disagree with ya
home depot sells 2inch aluminum L channel. pop rivets, & pop rivet gun. i got the electric sheet metal sheers from harbor freight for 25bucks
..the sheet of aluminum for the "belly" of the pan shouldnt be much at all. then you would just need some spray glue/diaper material.
i bet i have around 100 bucks or so into my pan. and maybe an hour worth of time building it. now im going to drill out the old rivets and add some taller lips and be done with it.
