LSD QUESTION FAST
i took apart my old XSI lsd tranny and it looks like right behind the diff the tranny case had been ground down to make it fit. not sure why tho.. the reason im asking this is because im putting that lsd into a stock cable b16 tranny and if i need to do that grinding of the case ill prolly skip the lsd prosses. thanks for your help
Check out this "How-To" and I think you will agree someone put a 94-01 carrier in your YS1 case.

Actually, all the YS1 transmissions with factory LSDs have the case ground like that. Mine is like that too, fwiw. If you are putting that LSD into another YS1 case, you'll need to grind down the fins.

That would be interesting.... I never heard that about the factory JDM YS1, but it is a very common mod that is needed to swap internals as it shows in that "How-To". Maybe if the factory modified the JDM YS1 cases for the optional LSD, then that might be where the idea for the "How-To" came from.
Either way, you are correct, if he plans to use a USDM YS1 case it will have to be modified to fit that LSD just like the one he pictured.

Sorry no replies sooner, but it has been a busy week.
It wasn't clear exactly which 2 trans you were talking about at first. You referenced to them by engine and trim level not actual trans code. IE - XSi, B16, vs. YS1, J1, Y1, etc... The only XSi trans that I have seen any documentation, or mention of, with a factory option of an LSD is the JDM YS1. Now it is very possible someone added an OEM LSD to the trans you had. Never seen any mention of a JDM J1 with the optional LSD. So just to make it clear for anyone reading this you have 2 trans:
1) JDM J1
2) ??????
Whatever the case may be, the check/fix is exactly what you have already done. I probably would have said notch it anyway since it won't hurt and the trans wasn't designed with that LSD in mind so you may as well while you have it open. Also as you found out, it is the same situation as in the link above, the carrier needs some added clearance inside the case.
