My DIY paint thread!
FINSHED PRODUCT PICTURES ON LAST PAGE!!!
Well the time has finally come to repaint my car.
its not that the paint is shitty, its actaully in great shape! But over the years its got some dings, paint chips, scrathes and the garage door shut on the roof! nothing major lol.
and the bad
there is a PAINTED graphic on the car which is the main reason for repaint, along with m3 fenders
no need to flame though. its all going to change. at the time i thought it was cool being 17, just got the car, i was ricer. after a few months i started to not like it, but the car wasnt a priority, but a hobby. so iwasnt going go pay check to pay check on it. i was going to get it painted last year but decided to boost. whats a nice looking car if it is slower than ****?
after i boosted i deicided i wanted to paint the car myself to stay true to the whole theme of my car, done by my self (and with the help of others)
i repainted my $500 DD last year to give me some experience
a friend of mine that works at an autobody shop will be helping me with this also.
some details about painting.
it will be done in my garage
i will be making a "paint booth" with plastic sheeting
the sanding and rinsing will be done out side the "paint booth" in the driveway
2 shop vac's will be running to help control the dust during painting
im using my 50 gal air compressor
i will be using a water seperator on the tank
gravity gun will be used
this is how the car is currently: yeah flame on me

and a little money shot.

now to some of the prep. pics from tonight...
here is the bumper/ i test fitted the new lip first(well back in like febuary when i got this stuff)

here are some of the prep tools i will be using

using scuff pads for scuffing the bumper and fenders before the first coat of paint since they came primed, and of course scuffing the whole car.

here is the bumper. i sanded the "license plate tabs" of the bumper and filled the holes with bondo.

Update 4/22/07
its beautiful outside so i scuffed the fenders
here is one scuffed and the other the way it came

now the bondo was in the holes pretty good, but i decided to use some plastic filler, and then a little bondo to fill in the low spots in the filler

here it is with some primer, which need a little sanding and its ready for paint.

im hoping the tempatures stay consistent to paint. looking to do it in 1-2 weeks. we went from last week having a snow storm to today of 80 degrees...
UPDATE 4/24/07
i used some plastic weld behind the filled bumper holes for "extra support". i laid it on like 1/2" think and went around the two like "posts" on the back of the bumper. its really pretty solid.

UPDATE 5/16/07
just starting

That's kind of irresponsible from your part. What about all the chemicals that you are going to release to the atmosphere.
There is a reason a shop has an actual PAINT BOOTH, because it has filters, that were made to trap the chemicals and never allow them to pollute the air and such.
Why don't you just do all the work and leave the paint to the professional.
I like to see people doing that kind of work and such.... but spraing at home...
Anyway, hope to see your work all done the way you've been wanting to do, good luck man!

"the bondo is drying as i am typing this, tomorrow i will sand some more on the bondo and scuff the fenders"
bondo is not fiberglass my friend...it is plastic, fiberglass is stronger than bondo especially for doing something ghetto like just filling a hole with bondo.
