Methinks someone didn't reinforce the front end properly. More overall bay pics and some overall suspension pics might help us...

did you cut and modify the unibody and THEN it started splitting apart? it's hard to tell by your sequence of pictures.

holy crap, that's crazy.

I think that the welding and fabrication forum will be able to help you out more here, so i'm gonna move this there.

Good luck

It is, it almost looks like the guy hit something. And the mig welds look pretty rough

Wow....that car needs completely torn down in order to properly address that issue. It's hard to tell from the pics what's what for the mostpart, but there has to be some type of pattern if it was all self induced. Looks like there's some accident damage too though....hard to tell.

that civic is awesome! looks like some support will need to be made rather than just band-aiding it if you want it to last. Its a good opportunity to make the front end more ridged for handling purposes too...and so you dont run the engine over on a hard shift or something.

I'm working on restoring an 82. Just got done replacing the entire floor pan and tunnel. But you gotta tell me what suspension that is! I can't find anything with the right diameter body to fit in the knuckle that is still thick enough to run in a macpherson setup without bending. Eibach told me to talk to ground control for a full coilover setup. Ground Control basically told me to **** off... "Here's your home work..." gave me some dimensions and told me to find something that could fit and then they'd work with me. Thanks chief! Cause I already messured everything myself and gave you dimensions the day before on the phone...
The 1st and 2nd gen are enough similar that I could adapt it.

Did you guys cut the bay like that in order for the tranny casing? If so, that's where the failure came from. You have nothing to absorb/transfer the force in the X/Horz axis that is at that specific location. The force is simply being transferred to another axis and causing it to wrinkle/bend. You don't necessarily need a complete tube frame, but something along the lines of adding members to absorb the forces going through the frame would definetely fix the problem.

Can you explain this a little more thoroughly? I'm retarded.

I cut out my car (1G Civic also) exactly like this for my engine swap..boxed back in with 1/4" steel plate. I can't tell in this guys pics, but it doesn't look like anything was used to box it back in.

But I'm wondering what I can do to avoid whatever happened to this guy.

I can't tube my whole front end, or anything close...I'm a broke college student and this is just a weekend car.

What kind of brace would suffice?

The chassis rails were boxed with 1" x 2" steel tubing. The cracks started right where this tubing ended. THe repairs you see, where made at the track to try and make the race. But unforunately they broke anyway. I have bought some 1 5/8 Chromoly tube and I am planning to tube it from the strut towers forward. I'll post the pics of the progress.

The shocks where are a real pain. The original car came with Carrera inserts. Unfortunately they are out of business. A guy from a place called Sellis Engineering claimed to able to make them from the original drawings. Stay away from him. I eventually ended up using adjustable Koni Inserts from Truechoice Koni. I simpley sawed of the bottom of the original strut tube (the part that fits in the knuckle) and welded a tube with the I.D. of the Koni strut to the top. I then welded the spring collar to the outside of the tube, an viola coil overs for a 73 civic.
