Steering noise. Is it my rack?
Hey guys,
I just started feeling a rattle and getting noise over bumps as well as when braking in my steering on my 89 CRX Si. Last year I had all four tie rods and rack bushings replaced.
Is it possible my rack is now junk? I haven't been able to find any rebuilt or used Si racks in my area, but I have found a used DX rack, but I'm not sure if they're interchangeable.
Am I on the right track here or is it more likely it's something else. The car doesn't feel too safe to drive with the noise I'm hearing as well as the vibrations I feel through the wheel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I did search and found some great threads, but I wanted to make sure I'm on the right track here, given that I just had the bushings replaced.

Funny you should ask, I just saw another thread where you said that and I thought, hmmm.
No, I have not. Should I try tightening it down and see if it fixes the problem?

Ok I adjusted it tonight. It helped a little bit but the problem is definitely still there.
B16-CRX, What I had replaced about a year ago was all the tie rods (inner and outer) and the rack end bushing.
deepsnipe, I sent you an IM. I don't have an extra rack.

did you properly bend the lock washers on the inner tie rod then?
did you check for play again in the your rack while you were down there? im sure you can locate it if you tried.
checked the actual steering rack bolts? the ones that hold the rack to the subframe.

heyllo everybody...i'm also having the same problems...but it not happened during brakes...just a normal driving condition, no matter turning or backforth the steering wheels...i did change the both sides inner & outer rod ends, both side upper arms, both side drive shaft and both side bolts joint. but the sound still there...
Hello everyone, I was just looking to explain this problem to a friend and thought I would chime in on what worked for me. This is a pretty common problem actually. If you go to this link and replace item 10 in the picture your noise should go away. You do have to pull the rack and open it up however. The bushing will look fine but the factory tolerance will be off just enough so there isnt a secure fit.
