Default ls/vtec....stock gsr w/ greddy kit....neither......

alright, i have an 00 gsr. it has 105k on and runs great. and the car is beatiful, a ding or two, and great paint, so i dont really want to sell it.

the only problem is that the car burns a little over a court (not sure if thats the right court lol) of oil a month maybe more. Now the car doesnt smoke what so ever, so i was told that is was the second ring on the piston and it gets all gunky causing the engine to use more oil. They said to fix it i would have to do a rebuild. Now rebuilds from what i have heard are alot and i might as well by a new used motor.

Now, My brothers friend has a ls/vtec motor with less than 10k on it (he owns a shop and is into his bmw and bikes) the motor is totally built, runs great, built and tuned to redline at 9800. He swapped the motor out of his sol that he sold and said he would sell it for $2500. and if it burned oil or the motor broke within 15k, he would take/fix it. the motor is a beast.

Other option is, screw it all keep the stock gsr motor, and buy his greddy 18g turbo kit and through it on the stock gsr motor running stock boost (compression tested out fine) and get a good tune and just add the oil.....

Any comments are welcome, also along with any other ideas.

depending on how much you go into vtec, it's going to burn oil.

My car burns about a quart of oil too, and I'm about to turbo it, and I'm just gonna keep adding oil.
Just pay close attention to it and itll be fine.

If you have the spare cash, get the lsvtec, then turbo that!

If you rev a little high and drive quite a bit that's about right....I burn the same about of oil. It's funny you ask that, I just asked my friend about it earlier today and he said he burns about the same amount. He says that high performance cars will burn off oil quicker.

i did find out its the something oil ring, the ring below the compression ring on the piston, it is all gunked up with **** and then it doesnt make proper seals causing it to use more oil. to fix it you have to do a rebuild. which i dont want to do.

Take the time to do a Rebuild and then Turbo.

Your motor needs a rebuild.

Why not start out with a fresh rebuild then install the Turbo?

Greddy kits are overpriced and underpowered, but boost is better than no boost....

If you can fix the problem with the GSR, boost and stock GSR would be my choice. My second choice would be the fully built Ls/vtec because a stock ls bottom with a b16/b18 head performs better with boost (especially since you say the ls/vtec is built). THEN boost the ls/vtec. If the ls/vtec is built right then:

ls/vtec + boost > gsr + boost

The reason i suggested the GSR as a first choice though is that im always careful with used "built/swapped/rebuilt" motors. So i suggest the gsr out of reliability.

id do a rebuild, its a good way to make sure everything is in check and if you find somethin wrong you can get a hold of it before you go for the turbo. it might be a little pricey but in the long run it would be worth it.

dude do a rebuild even if its sumtin simple as new piston rings trust me it will make it better on the long run because when you boost that motor you would be pushing it more and its already leaking oil meaning something is wrong with it
do it right and rebuild it then boost it :D

heres the best of both worlds rebuild you bottom end but buy the LS Crank, buy some LS forged rods and pistons, gsr crank and rod bearings, a new timing belt and water pump because you going to have to rebuild the bottm end anyway and then turbo that!!!

I know he's a a friend but i wouldn't buy an LS/vtec off of anyone especially for $2500 thats too much! only modification to your GSR block is bending the oil squirters a little to except the ls crank!
