Default Temperature Raises While Idle

I have a 98 EJ6 and while I'm completely stopped idling the temerature meter shoots up pretty quick. I always keep an eye on it when I'm stopped in traffic, and when I spot it going up I turn the heat on, that seems to make it cool down. Seems to only happen in the summer time when it's like 75 degrees and warmer out. The car has a new thermostat, so I don't think that's the problem, could it be a coolant temp. sensor or some other kind of sensor? As soon as I start driving again from a dead stop, the temperature goes back down to normal. Anyone have suggestions or had this happen to them before?

Coolant level is fine, water pump definately needs replaced (97k miles, original water pump), and I'll have to check the fan when I drive home from work today.

Sounds like your water pump isnt functioning well at idle, look into replacing it.

Any particular reason you didn't replace the water pump when you did the timing belt at 90k? That's SOP at every dealership and knowledgable shop I've ever talked to...
