i picked up a '88 si trans for pretty cheap, and i have a Gear-X 4.9 final drive on the way also. I am looking for pointers from anyone who has done the install before, any pics, any sites about it. ive already searched, and there were some si-zc trans hybrid things, but not a whole lot on vanilla FD replacement.
one of my questions, since this is going in my daily, is will a hf 5th gear work at all. my idea is to run the stock si 1-4, hf 5th and 4.9 final.
i know the job is a pretty big one, but i believe i have the tools, time and hopefully the help to do this. and i intend to document the process, but until the stuff gets here, all i have time to do is read about it. Im kinda dreading the countershaft replacement though...
i found this site.. http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/zcsifdswap.html which is just general info,a good site about rebuilds.. http://www.angelfire.com/on4/c....html
and a whole lot of integra fd install threads..

i have the oem Honda manual for the 91 si, both the real print version, and the pdf version.. but the pdf version doesnt have much except how to remove and install trans and clutch.. etc.. i havent had a chance to go through my actual print manual yet.
im hoping to start tearing into this in mid may, after im out of school(b.s in CompSci.. w00t), but the parts are already on their way.
cliffs:
hf 5th with 4.9 final, will it work?
any sites dealing with countershaft teardown and buildup?
any strange tools i need?
pointers?

Gears 2-5 can be matched however you want regardless of final drive. 1st gear and reverse are built into the Mainshaft.
No special tools will be needed if you're not messing with bearings. Since you're already in there, you may wish to replace your bearings for more peace of mind. You should already have snap ring pliers in your toolbox
Note that the bolts that hold your Final Drive ring gear on the Differential have a little arrow pointing.... that means they are reverse thread; clockwise to loosen and counter-clockwise to tighten.
You'll enjoy your final drive. Take a look at my signature line and you'll see I have done a similar setup.

alright, my transmission is completly apart now. its not quite as bad as i was expecting. on reassembly though, are there things i need to worry about lining up? in particular, the shift mechanisms... im a little unclear on what the bolt does that i removed from inside the bell housing. it seems to align the shift assembly inside the trans.. but does that connect to anything on the mainshaft? i didnt look at it before i pulled the mainshaft and countershaft out to see how it goes together..
also on reassembly, what do i need to do to ensure parts are properly lubricated? just buy some tranny oil and use that? or should i be using assembly lube?
