Default Oil On Top Of Pistons??

So heres the deal, I have a 95 DX with a mini-me turbo set-up but the current block is cracked. So I baught a complete B7 swap with a blown tranny for $50 but when I got it home and took the head off there was oil sitting on top of cylinder 2,3, & 4. I am not all that intelligent with this kind of stuff. It seems as if the motor was laying on it's side at a time because there is a little bit of oil in cylinder 2 and there is a little bit more oil in cylinder 3 and there is a little bit more oil in cylinder 4 if that makes any sense to yall? I called the dude back and ask him about it and he said his dad possibly tipped it on the side but it was a running motor when he pulled it (Was pulled because of the tranny) My question is, is it possible to have oil sitting on top of the pistons like that just from having the motor on its side? Or are the rings gone? Thanks.

Its deffinitly possible that the oil is in there because the motor was on its side.

i can't guarantee anything with your motor, but i have had this happen and the motor was a good motor. if the seller is a legit person you should have nothing to worry about...

He has given me no reason not to trust him other than this thing that is freaking me out. I met him through a friend and my friend has done business with him before but nothing dealing with motors. Thanks for the heads up and I hope everything is OK. Anybody else want to chime in?

no problem. And to clarify why, when the motor is sitting on its side, the oil is free to flow up the cylinder walls. although the pistons/rings are in cylinders restricting the oil, there is still "end gaps" on the rings, open spaces where the ends dont meet. although the gap is only a few thousands of an inch, the oil sitting ontop of this gap will seep through. First through the oil control ring, then through the lower compression ring, then through the upper compression ring, till it gets to the combustion chamber. when you sat the motor back up, this oil most likley found a nice little home by dripping and pooling onto the top of the piston. Not to say this is what happened for sure, it could very well be an engine failure. But this my suggestion is also a possibility. hope it runs well. let us know

Thank you alot for clarifying.
I think the motor is fine then. The only reason he pulled it was because of the tranny but he has B20/VTEC now. But now that I have had "it's no problem" by about 7 people (few friends) then I think I am fine just I wanted to make sure before I wasted A LOT of time doing a swap and come to find out it doesn't run. That would **** me off. Thank you very much.

yeah i agree.
should be fine.
as long as the cylinder heads dont have bad build-up.
