Default Hey everyone looking to buy an Integra help me out here

Hey everyone glad to be a member here. In the next few months I am looking to pick up an Integra GS-R, likely a 94-96, and I have a few questions.

1) Should I be able to pick up one with 60k miles or so in mint condition, leather and the works for around $8000 give or take?

2) What should I be looking for in the vin to secure that it's a legitimate GS-R and not just a GS?

3) Were there more than one style of wheels in a year? (I know that each year had different wheels but I'm wondering if there were more than one wheel offered in the same year for the GS-R)

4) Is there anything in particular I should look for to see if the car has been beat on? (i.e. Check the torque boxes on Mustangs for wear, stress cracks behind windows on Camaros, etc)

5) I know they put out 170 hp, but at what RPM and also what is the peak torque number?

6) It wasn't possible to get a 94-96 GS-R in silver was it?

7) All GS-Rs are 5-speeds, no?

8) What can I expect stock quarter mile times to be? Mid 15s?

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm a walking encyclopedia on domestic performance, but I find myself being allured to the quality of an import. My buddy has a 95 GS-R with the 5 spoke alloys, and another buddy has a 00 ITR, yellow. Both are damn nice cars and I would like to pick one up in addition to my current street machine, a 90 Camaro. I figure it would make a damn nice daily driver, and I may do a few things to it to make it unique.

Anyway, thanks again and if I have any more questions, I'll let you know.

Ok guys, two more questions:

1) I know the sunroof is standard on the GS-R, but just a petty little question about it that I don't particularly care about but am just curious to know: Does the sunroof have just a piece of glass, or does it also have an opaque piece in addition to the glass? Also are they all power?

2) How much, roughly, do you guys pay for full coverage insurance on these cars? Specifically those who are under 25...I'm 18, no tix or acc. in three years, just kinda looking for a ballpark figure here (130, 260 per month, etc.)

1) Should I be able to pick up one with 60k miles or so in mint condition, leather and the works for around $8000 give or take?

Maybe not

2) What should I be looking for in the vin to secure that it's a legitimate GS-R and not just a GS?

For starters, check for matching VIN numbers. Engine block etching: "B18C1." Valve cover: "DOHC VTEC."

3) Were there more than one style of wheels in a year? (I know that each year had different wheels but I'm wondering if there were more than one wheel offered in the same year for the GS-R)

A five-spoke alloy, 4-lug (standard). Everything else was dealer installed assessory / option.

4) Is there anything in particular I should look for to see if the car has been beat on? (i.e. Check the torque boxes on Mustangs for wear, stress cracks behind windows on Camaros, etc)

A complete maintainence / collision report should be supplied if asked for.

5) I know they put out 170 hp, but at what RPM and also what is the peak torque number?

???

6) It wasn't possible to get a 94-96 GS-R in silver was it?

1995 / 1996 Integra - Vogue Silver Metallic Clearcoat (NH-583M).

7) All GS-Rs are 5-speeds, no?

Yes

8) What can I expect stock quarter mile times to be? Mid 15s?

Between 15.6 & 15.4 1/4 (experience based upon driver).

9) Does the sunroof have just a piece of glass, or does it also have an opaque piece in addition to the glass? Also are they all power?

Glass accompanied with the sliding piece. Powered

10) How much, roughly, do you guys pay for full coverage insurance on these cars?

Roughly in the $1700 minimum range.

1) Mint? Sure, mines a 96 and it was mint when I got it last year. 60K? HA!! Good luck I got mine non-leather for 11k

2) (someone else can answer )

3) 96 Had its own style, 95-94 were the same style
http://www.vwbaja.8m.com/test1.html will show you the 96 style

4) Check the suspension, check the compression, and theres a place that holds water, I forget where it is though (someone else can help there also)

5) http://integra.vtec.net/geeser/specs.html

6) Yes it is but I heard that its rare

7) Only 5 speed transmission

8) Depends on driver, A guy here stripped his stock 95 GSR all the way down and got it to 14.9 I hear. But mainly mid to low 15s

9) As in a peice that slides over the glass to keep the sun out of your eyes? Yes All Power also.

10) Bout 1700-2000 a year normally.

Where on the block is this etching? Also isn't there an easier way like looking at the 8th Vin digit for the engine code? What number/letter would it be? Or is that simply an american car thing?

The etching is near where the tranny mates up to the block. It is on the front/exhaust side of the engine. GSR's before 96 did not have the vin's on the block and tranny, I believe.

for a gsr coupe the vin number will start with JH4DC2

happy hunting. in my area it was hard as hell to find a gsr for under 11k. i ended up with a 95 RS for 8950 in very good condition.
gsrs have a black valve cover with VTEC in big letters. you wont miss it. gsr has vtec, ls/rs/gs/se does not have vtec.
the gsr has 170 flywheel hp somewhere near redline, and around 128 pounds of torque (again, at the flywheel).
expect somewhere around 140 horsies at the front wheels.

Don't forget to check the tach. Redline should show 8100. If it is 7000 then it is an ls.

Here is a example picture:

Yeah, you can look at the vin number but you <U>should</U> also pop the hood and give it a visual inspection.

Tips to understanding your vehicles serial (VIN) number

They are as follows:

• 1st character- Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured.
For example: U.S.A.(1or4), Canada(2), Mexico(3), Japan(J), Korea(K), England(S), Germany(W), Italy(Z)

• 2nd character- Identifies the manufacturer. For example; Audi(A),
BMW(B), Buick(4), Cadillac(6), Chevrolet(1), Chrysler(C), Dodge(B),
Ford(F), GM Canada(7), General Motors(G), Honda(H), Jaquar(A), Lincoln(L), Mercedes Benz(D), Mercury(M), Nissan(N), Oldsmobile(3), Pontiac(2or5), Plymouth(P), Saturn(8), Toyota(T), VW(V), Volvo(V).

• 3rd character- Identifies vehicle type or manufacturing division.

• 4th to 8th characters- Identifies vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc.

• 9th character- Identifies VIN accuracy as check digit.

• 10th character- Identifies the model year. For example: 1988(J), 1989(K), 1990(L), 1991(M), 1992(N), 1993(P), 1994(R), 1995(S), 1996(T),
1997(V), 1998(W), 1999(X), 2000(Y)------2001(1), 2002(2), 2003(3)

• 11th character- Identifies the assembly plant for the vehicle.

• 12th to 17th characters- Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production
as it rolled of the manufacturers assembly line.

The only year silver GSR's were available was in 01... If it's a 94-97 body style and it's silver it's either Special Edition or LS... They were available in Cananda but not in the U.S....

Look under the hood.. You will notice a big difference between the engine bay of an LS or GS and a GSR.. LS and GS have a puny little empty engine bay.. the GSR is way more full and robust. And you will be paying 9 - 11k for a gsr with 60k miles on it.. unless you find a really really good deal... sorry to say but there is a big market for them.. so they dont come cheap!

Here's some specs I've found on the net and tossed them together:

I'm playing with the idea of selling mine, but I admit I'm having 2nd thoughts... Its a really fun car.

Looks like most of these have been answered ....

2) What should I be looking for in the vin to secure that it's a legitimate GS-R and not just a GS?
VIN needs to start with JH4DC238. Just to make sure though, check the block and look for the B18C1 stamp like in the pic above.

4) Is there anything in particular I should look for to see if the car has been beat on? (i.e. Check the torque boxes on Mustangs for wear, stress cracks behind windows on Camaros, etc)
The cars are rather robust, so nothing should "appear" to be broken. My 94 LS with almost 100,000 miles is almost as solid as my 98. A smart thing to do on a car you are almost sure you are going to buy is do a compression test. A lot of these things get turbos or supercharges and then resold. The motor should be strong even with high milage if it was well cared for.

5) I know they put out 170 hp, but at what RPM and also what is the peak torque number?
Power (SAE net): 170bhp @ 7600 rpm
Torque: 128 ft lbs @ 6200

Good page for specs:
http://integra.vtec.net/stats.html

Good page for dyno plots with and without mods:
http://b16a.com/dynocenter/home.html

6) It wasn't possible to get a 94-96 GS-R in silver was it?
I don't think so. The Silver GSR was only in the last few years. Maybe 2000+. I know they didn't have silver in 98 when I got mine.

Were there two shades of white offered in any years? I've noticed some bright white ones and some creamier colored off white ones.

94-98 Frost White
99-01 Tafetta white
97-98 championship white (itr only)[

to answer your original question #6. no silver gs-r was available for 94-00. silver was only available for 2001 gs-r's.
