Default knocking and rattling from engine when cold 1996 Civic EX

Thanks for looking guys. I have a 1996 Civic EX with stock D16y8 VTEC 182,000kms, intake, stainless steel headers.

When the engine is started at cold, the will be a rumbling rattling kocking noise sounding like something knocking around in a plastic milk jug. I have not done the timing belt or water pump or drivebelts yet, got the car at 135,000kms and not sure if it has been down yet, seen no repleacement sticker on motor.

Throw any ideas, thoughts, experiences or comments thanks to everyone!

Yes as stated above. Put some thicker oil in

I wouldn't use thicker oil. If the engine is toast, it won't matter, but if it's too thick it won't get to where it needs to be for proper lubrication.

I don't know about the "milk jug" sound, but the aluminum pistons in my '90 Si would clatter like a diesel engine when under throttle when cold. I had over 265,000 miles on it when I sold it though, and compression was 180 +/-2 lbs across the cylinders.

Use a piece of tubing or a stick (Carefully!) as a stethescope to listen to components like the PS pump or places on the block and head to see if you can narrow down the source.
