Default Q's about a 96 Hatch

well i'm in the market for a small reliable car. I like the styling of the ek and I really want a hatch because it's easiyer to carry stuff around. I've looked on autotrader around here and there's a bunch of CX models. Just wondering what it would take to make this car a little funner to drive? Possibly some springs and struts, sway bars etc... Heard that theres no point in putting money into the d-series motor or should I invest in i/h/e? One thing I would like to do is some sort of dash swap because the CX models here don't have a tach, is there any info I can find on that? Thank you for your time.

springs and shocks and a rear sway bar will make the car much funner to drive. bolt on's will do nothing for that engine. you can easily put an si cluster in there.

ok but the si models have the b16a3 right? So that engine would have a higher redline then the d16y7 I think the CX comes with. What's the redline for the stock CX motor?

all you need is a 96-00 ex or si cluster. it's plug and play.

Not hard at all. You just remove the 2 screws that hold the black bezel and then the 4 that hold the cluster in. Then you have 3 plugs that you remove from the back, its very very easy! An Si cluster should run you 150-200

I also have a CX, and our cars are already wired for a tach, Honda just didn't put one in them ... So as mentioned before, the EX or Si clusters are plug and play, just don't get an automatic one... lol

Edit: Assuming it's a 5 speed.

Well. I can tell you right now. DO NOT INVEST INTO THE D MOTORS!!!! i have a Dx ek and that motor is ****. im Constantly having problems with it. There are many different things you can do with you ek depending on what type of racing you want to do. drag? track? time attack? its all depending. I myself have gone with a 97 intergra LS motor. i plan on doing the Ls/Turbo setup for time attack down here. You could go with the b16 if you want to go all JDM like. But if you are looking for power you could always go with the K20 motors which have soo much potential. but also cost alot. Do research 1st and think about what kind of racing you want to do ( if you plan on racing that is...)

the si cluster has a redline at 8000. the ex cluster would be closer to what you want.

what does it matter? rev it up till it wont go anymore. that's where your redline is.

There are lots in Appearance/Cosmetic. Also check out the EK SQUAD thread. My boyfriend, Eran, has a '97 CX hatch.

$60-100 for an EX cluster.

I have an unmodified D16Y8 in my stock '98 EX coupe. This is my second EX coupe, both with the same unmodified engines, and I've NEVER had a problem with either.

My current D16Y8 does have a transmission problem though, which is common amoung D-series (bad ISB).

Well, the automatic won't have the tachometer that he wants.

6800 rpm redline. Fuel cut off at about 7100 rpm.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Ek9kidd &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">dude. did you even read my post? it doesnt matter what the CX/DX motors redline at...THEY ARE GARBAGE MOTORS!</TD></TR></TABLE>
NO, they AREN'T. You might have a lemon, but most of those engines are perfectly fine. I've seen D-series run on Mountain Dew before.

You should be able to tell by the sound too. I rarely check my tachometer while driving.
