speed sensor cable problem?
Alright, I don't know what else to call it, but I've got a zc swapped into a crx hf and the cable that goes from the gauge cluster to the tranny seems to have some issues. Sometimes my speedometer works fine, but at other times, especially when it's cold and the car has been sitting, works erratically. It'll still work, but typically reads 5-10mph lower than what it should. Also, when it's having problems, once it goes past 15-20mph the speedometer reading will keep rising, but after decellerating it won't drop past that 15-20mph range. If it's warm out and the car has been sitting, there's usually no problem at all. Or after driving for a while, it'll usually fix itself. One thing is that I am missing the the clip that holds the cable in place into the tranny. But even so, I've tried using duct tape to hold it in place, and that didn't fix anything. Sometimes if I take the cable out and play with it for a bit (I know, that sounds funny), it'll work, but that gets to be a pain having to do that almost everyday.
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

the end of it is proly stripped out. it happened to me. it wouldnt work and once in a while it would work for a sec the go back to normal. they are about 20- 30 bucks. go buy one and it should work.
did you try and pull out the speed gear? See if there's any play and just replace it. Make sure that the cable is installed properly too, they tend to come loose if there's no safety pin.
Do you happen to know how these cables work? Maybe if I had an idea of how they operate I might be able to fix it. The only thing I know about 'em is that the pin at the end that goes in tranny moves up and down.
If you take your cluster out and drive the car, you can actually see the cable turn...if it doesn't then there's a connection problem...The other end of the cable that goes in the tranny could be stripped too, like above mentioned....So just replace it.

Ah, yeah, I think it is stripped, because when I take it out of the tranny, I can pull the metal end away from the rubber jacket so that I can actually see the cable itself.

i have a dc zc swapped into an hf w 89 tranny and my speedo doesn't work at all, i recently removed my tranny to replace my clutch, i remember reinstalling the reverse sensor but i dont even remember what the speedo sensor even looks like, nor where its at, can any body explain where its at or something?
it should be at the top of the trans right above where the axles go into it. there should be 2 10mm or 12mm bolts holding it down. when you pull it out it has a little gear at the end of it. on my b16 there are two power steering lines going into it. but mine are cut and pluged. i heard thats bad.
Yeah....Remove the rubber boot and take out the little clip holding in the cable. Then unbolt the speed gear assembly from the trans and look to see if the teeth on the gear are chipped/stripped/damaged. If so....Problem solved. If not....We'll go from there.
i had finally found the cable tucked behind part of the frame, when i looked at it, i didnt see a little gear, i just saw the tip of a metal cable, i plugged it in the spot i saw that would hold it, when i drove my car it still wouldnt work and it was still throwing 17 vss, when i was changing my drivers side axle last night, i saw the cable and i reached up and pushed down on it and it went in about half a cm, after i got my car put back together and drove it my speed worked fine, accurate as well, when i get on though the speed bounces a little while its going up.
you NEED the speedo cable to be secured both into the transmission with a pin (dont have a pin? make one out of a paper clip!) you also need the cable to be fastened into the back of your gauge cluster too. it will clip in when its installed properly.
try unplugging the speedo cable from the back of your gauge cluster, and go for a drive. if the cable turns smoothly and consistantly, the problem may be your cluster or the cluster end of the cable.
if the cable doesnt spin smooth and even while unplugged, i would replace the cable but only after making sure it is poperly installed.
if that STILL doesnt fix the issues, the VSS in your gauge might be toast, or you may need to replace the VSS gear in your transmission, which is very simple.
Dont know how to do it? get a haynes manual.
