buying a 1989 Sterling 827 (honda drive-train) sli with a transmission issue.
First of all I am thinking of purchasing a 1989 Sterling 827 sli (2.7 litter Legend engine and transmission) for $500. It has 150k miles and a transmission problem.
The problem with the transmission is that it doesn't downshift to 1st gear automatically. You must manually put the shifter in first and to d4 after 1st gear. Is this a serious problem? Anyone with an automatic tranny have had or heard of this problem? Is the car worth it?
I am planning of getting it tomorrow if it still for sale but want some input.

Hmm... weird. Never heard of this car until now. Cool.
GL with it if you buy it and post up some pics and more info on it.
Made by Rover? As in Ranger Rover, etc?

I think that they are separate companies.

My mom once had a policyholder with a Sterling, back when they were first released here. He had several interesting claims. Of the ones I remember, the one that stands out the most was when he tried to file a medical claim against his auto insurance. He managed to break his arm trying to get out of his Sterling that had decided to lock him inside.
Was he a dumbass? Unknown. Are Sterlings really that bad? Well, they didn't last long. Is it true? Yep.

Bastardized relationship with Rover.... this relationship also led to ZC engines in several of their UKDM cars.
This is one of the top 50 "Crap Cars" FYI.

Honda designed and sold parts to Rover (before BMW bought Rover) in exchange for a factory in the UK. All of the current(or up until the end of 2006) Rover/MG cars were based on Honda platforms, such as the mid-90s Civic and European Accord. But, with different electronics and drivetrains.
The 827 is essentially a Legend, underneath...biggest difference is sheetmetal and some various components. I'd see what the codes for the 827 transaxle is and one from a Legend V6 is or even a little bit later Accord V6(the 2.7l, not 3.0l).

I think Honda's V6 was exchanged for Isuzu's diesel expertise.

that tranny is fucked and needs a rebuild. who knows how long it'll last. i know this because i had an 89 legend up until last year and i had to have the tranny rebuilt when i had that same problem.

all i read was that you want to actually pay money for a handful of headaches. why the hell do people buy these obscure *** cars that are prone to breaking with no parts support?
