I went to install a new axle seal on the driver side of my 92 GS-R transmission because the old one blew out and dumped all the fluid out very quickly. Well I take the int shaft out, put the new seal in, I used a screwdriver to gently push it in a little bit pushing a little on each side until it was even and I cleaned the area with some brake cleaner. Well I put everything back together and the car is dripping fluid out the seal. WTF?! Did I do something wrong, how are you supposed to install the seal? It felt like it pushed in all the way. This really sucks. Any suggestions?

 

Unfortunately, you may have ripped the seal. The seals are pretty fragile and do not like being pressed on with metal. I use a small piece of wood or plastic over the seal and then tap on the wood with a hammer until the seal is in place. Another thing I found that works really well is the PVC plastic pipe fittings if you can find a size that fits the seal well.

If the seal looks in good shape, then pay close attention to where the oil is leaking from. If it is leaking between the int shaft and the seal, then i suggest simply adding some high temp grease to the inside lip of the seal. If it is leaking between the seal and the tranny, then you could add a light coat of high temp RTV to the outside of the seal before pressing it into place.

 

you damaged the seal with the scewdriver, try to use something other than metal, try wood, hardplastic, hard rubber, pcv pipe. they also make seal drivers for different sizes as well and these tend to work better than above, but sometimes u have to use whats available at the time. also make sure the trans is not overfilled.goodluck

 

I usually use the old seal to drive or seat the new one in.

 

check your diff bearings. when they go bad they really allow a lot of fluid to flow. i thought I had the same problem as you, and replaced the seal and then found a bad bearing and ended up pulling my trans apart to replace that, not one of the funner things I have done.

 

How far in is it supposed to go? I didn't push it very hard at all with the screwdriver because I was afraid of damaging it. I think that may have been the problem.

 

I took it apart again the seal seemed to be pressed in there pretty well I dont see how it could have been pouring out fluid so fast, but at the top of the seal there was a small hole in transmission case, is it possible something cracked or is that supposed to be there and did I put the seal in too far? I know my diff is not shimmed correctly, it makes a lot of noise, maybe the stress could have cracked something?

 

a quick question, how'd you take out the seal in the first place? Mines ripped so I need to replace it. But like stated above, hopefully it's not the bearing

 

You can pry it off with a screwdriver or better yet, get a seal puller at any auto parts stores. To reinstall the seal, it's best to use a seal driver.

 

I usually use a large impact socket to drive the new seals in, it puts even pressure all the way round the seal.

 

I've had to replace that seal twice now. What i have found is the the axle nut socket fits nicely on it when you hammer it in. Make sure it is flush all around the seal so that it sits square in the hole (imperative for a good seal!!!)

Make sure that the part of the intermediate shaft that goes into the diff is not scored and has a nice, smooth finish.

The reason why a bad differential would leak is that it would allow too much play in the axle, and since the axle is half the seal, it will leak out.
