Default timing belt tension...

hey guys i am building a gsr motor and i need help with this timing belt...i have put it on several times and when we put it on and rotate the crank, the belt slips and misses the teeth on the gears. i did torque the tensioner down to the correct specs of 40 ft-lbs and the slack in the belt is still too much. any advice on how to get the belt on there right??

Did you follow this procedure?

http://www.c-speedracing.com/h...t.php

If you still can't get proper tension, you can use a coat hanger or a piece of wire to apply additional tension while you tighten the tensioner bolt.

Im sure theres a thread on this topic but the way I did it on my LS/Vtec was get cams set TDC set the crank off about a half tooth thus making perfect top dead center upon tensioning.

so.. when you make the belt tight it pulls crank to TDC.

c-speed racing says:

Once the new belt is in place, you will need to retension the tensioner pulley. To do so, place the crank bolt back on the crank and turn the crank counterclockwise three teeth and then tighten the tensioner pulley. The timing belt should have about a 1 inch deflection if you press on it in the center along the front of the loop (long side).

we did not move the crank back three teeth while tightening the tensioner. will this have an affect on the tension??

also, what do you mean about the coat hanger or wire?? i dont understand what to do with the coat hanger to get extra tension
