Default a little confused here.

Ok I seem to have a few questions as to the motor of my car. For all purposes, I thought I did not have a VTEC, however I was told that I do, now I know that the 98 EX's come with a VTEC in them but I was pretty sure I didn't have it. So my question is how do I go about figuring out if I have a VTEC? And if not, what all do I need to swap it over to a VTEC? I know I need the head, the ECU, and the solenoid (which I'm fairly positive I have on my head already). By the way I do have a 98 EX. Thanks y'all!

They weren't all equipped with it though were they? If they were I thought they had a VTEC light on the dash

a VTEC light...... lol.

All EX's are equipped with VTEC. Same goes with SI.

The only reason you wouldn't have VTEC is if someone destroyed the stock motor and threw in some random shitty non-vtec because they didn't have money or wanted to save money.

Tell yah what... Buy a short ram intake for your car. Properly install it. Let your car warm up and make sure it has enough oil (since VTEC doesn't engage when not warmed up/enough oil). Then floor it with the gas all the way down and listen carefully at 5500 RPM's. You'll know if you have VTEC for sure then.

Do you see the green plug, near the top left corner of the valve cover? Do you also notice that bronze colored cap? Look on your motor, in that area for something similar. If you have that, you have VTEC. That's your VTEC solenoid.

Yeah but just because it's there, doesn't mean it has to be hooked up does it? I'm not quite sure myself so I'm not going to say anything with confidence.

See thats what I thought too. I'm just not sure. Anyway, I'm gonna check on that tomorrow and post what I have. I know I have the plug and the bronze cap thing. But I don't tend to run my engine up to 5500RPMS so I don't know how I would know anyway.

Well, if it wasn't hooked up, he'd be getting a CEL. I can 99.9% say that his car has VTEC. Without a motor code, we won't know for sure.

Look underneath your 1st runner on the header, at the left. There should be a little rectangular block that juts out off the engine and angles up slightly. It should say on there the engine code (ie - D16Y8, D16Z6, etc).

ALL '96-'00 Civic EXes came with the SAME engine.

D18Y8
1.6L 16V SOHC VTEC

There should be a small cylinder at the upper left corner of your engine. That is your VTEC soleniod. Cars without VTEC don't have one.

It's not even pretty much. You do.

Check the link in my sig. You have an EJ8. If you read your VIN you'll also see the fourth, fifth and sixth digits read EJ8 (the chassis code). The info listed for an EJ8 is info for your car.

The little brown cylinder at the top of the circle...yes. What's beneath it is just the wiring.
