Default car has been sitting for 3 years, what to do?

situation: my friend's EF with an 12:1 Compression LS/VTEC motor has been sitting for about 3 years now.. no start-ups within the whole time period... he wants to start it up again.

I know the battery needs to be replaced, and he said the radiator and most likely all of the fluids.. but does the gas tank need to be drained and refilled?

i believe he was using 91 octane when he was driving it.

i just wouldnt want him to start it and ruin something.

if the fuel has been sitting for 3 years i would probably drain it out or add a bottle of fuel treatment and octane booster to get help get the fuel good again. the problem being is after it sits its starts to turn into varnish and looses it good qualitys it would probably run, but run like **** and with a high comp motor you want the best fuel you can put in there.... hope that helps a bit

Change all of the fluids, drain the gas tank and refill it, and replace the fuel filter. When you go to start it, disable the ignition (unplug the distributor) and crank the engine until the oil pressure light goes out before starting it.

In addition to the above I would also put some oil(like a tablespoon or 2) in each cylinder through the spark plug hole, like some marvel mystery oil, to get the rings free if they are rusted. all the oil has come off the cylinders you dont want to crank it dry. especially if there are rusted rings. Turn the motor over by hand at the crank just use a ratchet after you add the oil, you can leave the plugs out when you do this to make it easier to turn once the motor spins free and it is cranked a couple times hook everything back up and try the starter. Oh and why was this car not driven and sat for 3 years did he go to jail or something?

hahaha.. he didn't drive the car because he bought an Element and used it as his primary car and only drove the hatch on the weekend. Soon enough though, he ended up not driving it at all and now its just sitting in his parents garage..
