and no, it's not the alternator belt (no a/c or p/s either). the alternator belt only has like 1/4" flex.. i recently replaced the IM gasket, could there be a small gap letting air in? it's also idling somewhat high @ about 2.5k RPM, and most of the common causes i know are not it (IAC, FITV, TPS, ECU, vacuum leaks). any ideas? it's unbearably loud, with the hood up and myself right in front of it, it makes my ears ring.

spray carb cleaner around possible said leak? does that work on newer cars? I dont see why not. That might help you rule out that poss.

Also, take a tube and put it on your ear (to block out other noises, and try to isolate the sound by moving it around the engine bay till you find the noise.
