Auto stores are your best bet, look for spray cans that are rated for 500 degrees and up.
Most of the time, you need to strip your valve cover first with paint stripper (btw... don't let that get to you... that thing burns like crazy!!!!), wipe it clean, degrease it, spray it!

Heres a thread where I showed how to remove the valve cover..you can catch a peek at the painted shield in one of the pics.

if you search all around the forum you can find numerous threads about this, some with really great info and tips on how to get it to look the best it can. i saw one recently in the civic forum about how to make it a wrinkle finish, kind of like the K-series valve cover.

yeah, I saw that one too. It was Krylon paint, said he got it for $.01 at AutoZone I believe.

I painted my F22B1 valve cover. Painted it black with the H and VTEC painted red. Looked good IMO. I thought I had a picture loaded but I guess I don't anymore. I'll have to load one up when I get home later. I used Dupli-Color hi-temp engine enamel from AutoZone to paint it. It never chipped or anything when I had it on the car. I've since sold it to another member on this board but I believe they had it stripped and powder coated.

I used the wrinkle finish on my valve cover, which turned out great. I had some paint left over so I went ahead and did the heat shield as well, but after about 6 months the paint on the heat shield started to peel off. So get the hi-temp paint for the heat shield.

what material is your heat shield? if its just aluminum sheet metal you should sand it with really fine grit sand paper first so the paint has something to grab on to.

almost forgot

as you can see it's not a wrinkle finish but it's not smooth either. Saw someone else on here do it to a Civic valve cover years ago and thought it looked pretty good so I decided to try it. I only did this to the black, I made the red smooth. To get the finish I just held the spray can a little further away than you should, it gave it a rough finish. It was rougher before I used the clear coat, forgot to mention that earlier. When I applied the clear it took away some of the roughness but still gave it a different texture. Overall I though it looked good.

The car was a Black 95 EX and the red matched my red Iceman CAI pretty nicely.

is there a DIY on painting the VC, i'm looking to paint it by just scuffing it with 3m pads fine & superfine. cleaning it up (no degreaser today) and baking it at 215? or is it 300?

i have a can of wrinkle black and hi temp red so it's gonna look like this

yep.

About the brand question, alot of people in A/C either go with Dupli-Color high het engine enamel or VHT. VHT makes a red wrinkle finish dead alike the CTR/ITR red. Look it up, you'll find some good VC's. There is also a painted VC thread

just so you know oem, I didn't use wrinkle paint on that valve cover. I used Dupli-Color hi-temp paint.

I read a write-up years ago on how to get a wrinkle like finish without buying wrinkle paint. Basically you just hold the paint a little further away while you spray and it creates a textured surface. Not wrinkle but not smooth, and smooth wasn't what I wanted (for black anywyay, I want the red smooth though). Once I had a nice texture build up with multiple coats of paint, I then sprayed it with a clear coat to help protect it.

also, I dont know how you plan on painting the VC but if you paint the red first and then tape them off... make sure you pull the tape of while the black paint is wet so you get left with a cleaner edge on the letters. I didn't do this and the edges weren't as clean as I had hoped but it wasn't horrible.

i tried to get it like your old vc and it was a massacre. so i did what we do on HT, make somethin outta nothin. and it came out decent for my first spray. though the F-Series covers don't give you much room to work with, i think my next one will be more time consuming.

and to awdgsx...if you are wearing them, air max 90's =

the texture looks nice, but I would have sanded down the paint on the letters so they were just aluminum colored, then sprayed clear over it all. I never really cared for it when people painted the whole thing like that without shaving the letters. If the letters are there I feel there should be some contrast so they stand out some. Just a thought
