Does a 1990 Civic AWD wagon have any redeeming performance value?
I've got a couple at my church that want to get rid of a 90 civic AWD wagon for $300, needs minor mechanical work.
My question is this: Does this ugly little thing have any redeeming performance value at all
?
Has anyone seen anything cool done to one of these things (motor swap, etc.) it is AWD afterall so it seems it could be made into a fun cheap little rally beater type thing.
Am I crazy?

They are ugly for sure, but they make great daily drivers. Plenty on people mod the heck out of them. My son has a 91 , with a JR Supercharger, header, 2.5" ss exhaust, lowered, CRX Si wheels. Runs great, looks pretty good and is in terrific condition inside and out. For $300, buy it!
How bad is the body? I've seen some absolutely awful wagovans. IMO not worth it unless the body's 80% or better.
They're just like an EF, only bigger. Pretty much anything you can do to a hatch or rex you can also do to the wagovan. There've been some pretty mint wagovan setups around.

If nothing else, for $300 you could probably find the right people who want the parts and just get your money back + for parting it if you don't want to make it fast (for a wagovan).
Oh boy, I'm starting to get excited about this! Check this link for a sweetie:

I'll find out about the body in a day or two.

This could be very cool. What would be the most simple/easy/cheap motor swap for this rig (I'm a total Honda newb BTW, sorry). Or, maybe a simple little turbo would be best...I could pull that off for cheap (I work at a large salvage yard so a lot of turbo parts are laying around)

If you're auto-savvy, work at a scrap yard and have some fabbing skills, I say go with the stock motor, a freshening up (major tuneup) and a small turbo. This is assuming the wagon's engine is the D16A6. Check out Dr. Latino and Tippyman 's build threads if you want to see the potential of tese motors.

my 88 wagon is 4wd and boosted. there gears are low so at the 6500RPM rev limiter of the stock d16a6 will let me hit about 130mph. just last night i turned it up from 10lbs to 12lbs and the 4wd is holding up just fine to all the power. before u ask yes u can put a b-series and keep it AWD we have a member on hondacivicwagon.com that has done it. it requires the CRV tranny and CRV rear end and some custom mods the the pas. mount, rear engine bracket, drive line, and then fab up the rear subfram to mount the CRV diff to it.
