Braking The Ice
O.K. ,just bought my first Prelude day before yesterday and did some online research and this is the forum it got my attention the most so here I am,to all you guys you are great.
About the "lude" year 1990 , 162,xxx miles , manual trans,B20 engine SI ; I am a little worryed about the high mileage on this SI,engine sounds great at idle or when you accelerate in neutral however when I accelerate in 1st,2nd,3rd...etc when the engine is pulling hard and runs between 2,000-3,000 rpm,I think I hear a lot of valve noise,I hope this is not a big issue, the engine does not seem "healthy" for being a DOHC 2.0L it feels like "something" is holding it back, after I got the car I found out that the car failed emmisions so I think the lack of power has something to do with not passing emisions, defnately something not right somewhere, also at idle it does not run very smooth,it oscillates and if you turn the steering wheel the rpm would jump to about 1,300 rpm and would only come back after like 10 seconds
On the other hand something SQUEAKS real bad when parked if you turn the wheels left or right, when you drive it also squeaks when you drive over bumps-now don't think it is a small mouse squeak- it squeeks so bad that people on the sidewalk turn their heads to see what the heck is happening,it is really embarassing beleive me,anyway it sounds like rubber squeak, probably upper control arms?dunno.
On my way home friday night about half way THE BIG SURPRISE, the clutch was gone,I could'n put it in to any ger and I was stuck at the light with my girl in the back in my other car,so I call her up and tell her to give me a push so I can stick it into 1st cause after the car rolls,I did no clutch changes, she laughed her *** off on the car I bought, finally I made it home with a little help from each light and found out that there was no more brake fluid in the clutch reservoir,so today I hit the junk and got a new-well used-clutch pressure hose and voila clutch is back after like 30 minutes of work, the old one had a crack and lost all the fluid there, the "nice " guy I got it from said:"The cluch might use a bleeding, but it is fine".
Well thanks a lot guys for the time to read this and sorry for the long post,I promise it won't happed again, and would be very happy to see your inputs, was I smart buying this or not really(I missed stick very much this is why I got it+ I always wanted a "lude"),the car was $400,thanks again.

Cliffs:
OP bought a 1990 Si, 162,000 miles. He hears a lot of valve noise when accellerating and is worried about the condition of the engine. It squeeks when he turns and it wont pass emissions. He had to replace the clutch pressure hose because his cracked and he lost all the fluid. His girlfriend laughs at him for buying this car and having to push it when he couldn't get it in gear. He wonders if this was a good buy or not for $400.

Start with a valve adjustment and go from there on the valve noise.
Check axle boots, ball joints, power steering fluid. Give it a good tune up such as plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, oil, oil filter, air filter, seafoam, 02 sensor, etc. and see where that gets you...
Does your clutch work now?

Thanks, thans, yes clutch perfect front end no knocks or other noises, only LOUD squeaks not like power steering noise but like rubber when turning to left or right or going over bumps, could be upper arms?
Valve adjustment is probably my best bet, wish I knew how to...
Next week will do oil+filter, air filter, spark plugs, wires look brand new so maybe not yet,how many O2's has?

Yeah, check your ball-joints and bushings.
Buy a Helms manual or factory service manual from ebay and you'll be able to do a valve adjustment or anything else you want.
Your car is OBD1 (or OBD0...not sure exactly) but you only have 1 02 sensor. 96 and up cars have 2.

find a nice tall cliff (not cliffs notes) preferable around 1000 feet or so, then allow the auto to roll off the edge and smash into a million twisted pieces of metal on the rocks below, then throw a moltov cocktail onto the wreckage, just to top it off. Just get it on video.
all the money your going to spend on that lemon you could have gotten a better 3rd gen or possibly a 4th gen in much better condition.

So you've never had success fixing a car?

Sounds like something one of my friends would do.
