Im going to be making a aluminum exhaust for my 240 and I'm wondering what kind of aluminum you guys using. Good ol' 6061 or something else?

 

Uhh well alright let me stop you for a moment. Look up the melting point of aluminum. I'll save you the search, about 1220 degrees F. Exhaust gases come out at or above that temperature. Things inside the catalyic converter can heat up to over 1500 degrees due to them processing unburnt fuel. Your pipe will weaken far below that temperature point and fail. There's a reason why steel is used, it melts at about twice aluminum does and holds strength under high heat better. I don't really recommend it anyway. Cat-back would be chancy but axle back might be alright depending on system length and typical temperatures.

It'll work just fine. We use them for the downpipe, and all the way back.

 

the jesus christ of honda-tech, tony palo, has stated in similar threads that aluminum exhaust can and will work without melting.

Aluminum won't work for the exhaust, only the downpipe.

 

I would assume best used in race environment when it is intermittent heat. The aluminum won't melt but it'll get REALLY soft and expand a lot. I could imagine what a whole exhaust system would look like, it would bend and buckle all over the place.

huh? i recall a thread where someone was showing off an aluminum exhaust and many were saying that it wouldnt work and you said they were wrong. i asked you to elaborate and you said something to the effect of "well i've done it one 3 different cars if that tells you anything." am i mistaken?

lol dood if it works on the downpipe wouldn't it work for the exhaust lol...I think he's joking with you

 

tony, what thickness do you guys use on the downpipe?

 

.065" on all of it.

Please remember one thing. Yes aluminum exhausts work for hondas, ONLY because we are blessed with such efficient motors that have lower than average EGT's (when tuned and built correctly of course).

Many others motors in this world are limited by knock, not MBT. Anytime a motor is limited by knock and cannot approach MBT, then the EGTs will be higher.

 

I was actullay just thinking about doing this on my hatch - who makes exhaust flanges out of aluminum?

it wont melt. go for it deffinately...we have made plenty of them and there has been no issues with it what so ever aside from noise complaints from neighbors because lets face it 4" exhaust is LOUD...

I was afraid that was the answer. Those can make the project spendy in a hurry, but its probably still cheaper and easier than milling my own flanges.
