Default Amplified hidden VS. Roof mounted Fuba style antenna

Hello all,

I've been through too many antenna masts to want to install another one, so I've finally decided to either go roof mount or amplified hidden. I've got a Fuba style sitting around (one that needs 12V) or I could find a hidden one on eBay or other places pretty affordable. Anyway, I read that the hidden one doesn't really pick up AM stations (I need AM for XTRA Sports 690 when the Los Angeles Kings hockey team play) so AM is somewhat needed.

What other pros/cons of these two units have?
Added: BTW this is for my wagon....

AM antennas don't perform well without a ground plane... A roof mount will perform better receiving AM than an antenna stuck in the dash...

So do the ones that have a power wire (i.e. that are amplified) perform any better than ones that don't? I've seen several roof mount antennas that don't have power wires..

Such as: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

I know it says for VWs but I'm just asking.....I do have an original one from a VW **gasp** and I really don't want to put it on my car....

This one will... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...D=WMA a little bulky but when installed properly on the inside top of windshield, will work very well and hardly noticeable from outside. 94

Hey fcm, would that pull in AM signals? I listen to AM for Los Angeles Kings hockey broadcasts if I can't watch it...

Added: I was also told that I could run the ones out of the S2K or the NSX...?? Any confirmation on that?

I have installed many of them on "custom" cars, some with only AM radios, never had a problem with reception. 94

I heard around the rumor mill that I can do an S2K conversion...using the hole that's there rather than drilling another hole in the roof....

Any confirmation on that?

I just found the authentic Fuba Betaflex-D one on ebay.....I already have a windshield mounted antenna (my alarm).

Well, I did an offer on ebay for $50 (it was listed for $59.99). Finally got an answer and they accepted it. It's a genuine Fuba Betaflex-D.

Yeah, yeah...I know. AM is something to laugh at. But since the LA Kings' games are broadcast on AM I need to be able to listen to it if I have to.....It's pretty much the only reason I "worry" about having AM reception.

AM is def. good for sportscasts
and talk radio
and the occasional test from the emergency broadcast system
def good for sports coverage on your favorite teams

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-2...100TR

or try this
'sposed to pull AM stations in with FM quality sound
'sposed to make FM sound like a CD...etc

i put a few in a long time ago but that's when they used to be like 400 bux.
that's why they didn't sell real well when XM and Sirius were either launching soon or already launched...and about the same price if not cheaper. doesn't work too bad though...it better for a $200 "antenna".

fubas and in-cabin antennas are cool cuz it's a dif. look then the standard mast.
i dunno if anyone else found this out about the fuba antennas in volkswagens...but usually if you go to replace the stock decks you basically end up killing your AM reception?

I ended up getting the genuine Fuba Betaflex-D roof mount antenna.

On a side note, that HD radio is for Pioneer. I've got an Alpine head unit installed in the wagon. Thanks for the help though...

OK looking at the instructions and it says that the hole should be more than 6 inches from any edge...what is the purpose of that?

That is because of the "ground plane" that was mentioned in the very first reply (which was basically all the answer you needed).

No.

Use the 12v switched lead in the radio harness if anything.

Does anyone know if the roof mount antenna of a 2003 civic 3 door Si can be adapted to fit a 97 civic hatch?

First, you could try using the search function because I'm sure you'll find one of the many many threads already created about this subject.

Second, if you don't find what you're looking for and you're 100% positive that you're unable to modify your search results to fit your application, you could try making your own thread instead of posting in one totally unrelated to what you're asking.

I find it hard to believe that you can't find something useful in one of those 245 threads...

And btw, lazy people like you are the reason people around here aren't more willing to help... Especially when the questions being asked have been answered many many times before...

I have nothing to do with how the forum is set up. I didn't design it...

and btw, I'm not looking for an S2000 antenna, i'm looking for a '03 3d Si antenna, unless there the same thing, at which point you know something I don't. Therefore, in the first place you could have just told me that and this could have all been avoided.

Alright, that was my bad... Didn't see the "si" in your post...

Although you did hijack a completely irrelevant thread, I was kindof an *** () so I'll try to help ya out... lol

From the looks of the pic in the link below, it appears that the Si antenna wire plugs into the base, which attaches to the roof with a flange nut...
http://www.hondaautomotivepart...EAKER

I don't know if you could reuse the '97 antenna base and drill it out for the threaded portion of the Si antenna base, but if you got a blockoff plate and drilled that, it might work...

The only thing that concerns me is that the Si antenna wire has another plug on it, but it is probably just a ground since it doesn't look like there is any direct contact with the body....
