I replaced the timing belt and water pump. I put the timing belt backon tightened it up and it seem'd good. However after starting the car we heard a weird noise pulled the belt off and it was loose. I checked the time and it was all inline At TDC. I tried retightening it but to no avail. The weird part now when I turn the crank the belt gets loose at the top between the cam gears I turn it three teeth and it gets tight again. I don't know what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever you change your belt or pump you should ALWAYS change the tensioner.

 

like he said ^..and when u put in a new tenssioner make sure u dont over tighten the belt...theres a spec on how tight it should be..

 

the tensioner is 40ft lbs.. i think.. i'll double check it to make sure. when putting on timing belt, the book recommends that you put the belt in a certain order, Crank Pulley, Tensioner, Water Pump, Exhaust, Intake, i think...to me it doesnt matter as long it goes on, and your problem is that when you put everything on, DO NOT TIGHTEN THE TENSIONER YET, YOU MUST TURN THE CRANK PULLEY WHILE THE TENSIONER IS STILL LOOSE, turn it counter clockwise, about 3 teeth over, then tighten the tensioner... i had the same problem you did today, my friend told me to do that and it worked perfectly, everything seems tight.. so give that a try and let us know

 

i ran into this once, a buddie got a autozone or something like that and the gear on the water pump was much smaller than the oem one. got a honda one, problem solved.

 

the tensionor is probaly wore out and its not letting it tighten up all the way.
