Same engine, unless you're talking about a JDM H22A from a Prelude Type-S .

As far as transmissions, manual transmissions are more performance oriented than automatics. Automatics have things like torque converters that consume generous amounts of bhp.

Also, I heard 5th gen automatic transmissions are flimsy.

i remember reading some where that the way vtec hits in an automatic motor is a little weaker than the way it hits on a manual motor

theres about a 15-20 whp difference between a manual and an automatic.

Dude there the same engine, h22a, just hooked into an auto tranny, so probly just has different gearing.

The torque converter on the automatic consumes some horsepower.

you're both right, the automatic tranny allows less power to get to the ground, the shifts are made to be more smooth rather than for performance and quickness, and the gear ratios are longer not to mention that the auto only has 4 gears......all of those factors contribute to making it slower

if you want to really get picky the auto also adds a bit of weight

i watched a 98 i think auto lude put down 147 with a catback and intake, only 30 minutes before i put down 164 with a bone stock 01 lude. i know its because of drivetrain loss, but isnt that really the question ?

trust me, manual transmission is way better than automatics. i did a "15.9" on a h22a1 automatic no launch juz started at d1 to d4. i know its embarassing.. dont mention it.

mods are:
intake (ebay) with k&n filter
dc headers
catback exhaust
msd blaster
vtec controller.

for a manual h22 with the same mods the fastest time they had is 14.2
