We had a guy in here, knew his stuff. Also helped a lot of people and had tons of knowledge and info.

Then they banned him.

I'm not a welder by trade, I'm a pipe fitter so I work along side welders and fit for them.
In western Canada they earn from about 25 to 45 an hour depending on tickets and experience. If you have your own rig going rates are from 90 an hour to well over a 100 depending on the deal they set with an employer.

Yes and No, I'm not the type of person who can weld all day on just one thing. We also do a lot of in house work on cars so I don't have to weld all day.

first you need to see if youre good, then you need to spend about a month welding 6-8 hours a day.

tig welding isnt dirty, but mig and definitely stick could be.

i weld on the SAE mini baja team here 8 hour days a lot, and as much as i love to weld, i couldnt do it for the rest of my life as my job.

I weld sheetmetal all day. I love it. Nothing like running a 7.5 ft tig weld on 11g....without stopping

I never get bored welding becuase of the concentration it takes. Plus I pretty much just tune out the rest of the shop and weld my skinny *** off in my sweet little tinted welding cave

I'm also the backup robot welder operator and backup cnc press brake operator so I get to do go other stuff when people take days off so if I do happen to get pissed at welding I can always go do something else.

No I do not have any certifications at all. Only about half of the people I weld with actually do. We make decent money for the area and the benefits are decent since I work for a large company.

Before I worked for myself I was both a mig and a tig welder, I only lasted doing the industrial mig work for like 6 months, I hated it. But the tig welding was something I was fine with doing as a living, its a lot cleaner, less smoke etc. I think I was making around $20-24 an hour with a low pressure pipe ticket.

Before, I used to work in the Pipe welders union(250) and made about $40~120/hour. Went from refinery's to ditches, and to nuclear stuff around Southern California. It was very dangerous of what I was doing and work wasn't consistent enough. There were times for like 2 weeks to a month where I didn't have work.

Now....
I'm a welder in the Aerospace industry(not allowed to mention which one and what I do exactly). I pretty much MIG, TIG, and etc all day long on exotic metals which some of you never heard of. And lets just say, I get paid about the same as my pipe welding career all day long, 5 days a week.

Will, right now, if you become a journeyman(must have D1.1 LA city and 6G/6G-R cert and completed your apprenticeship) you could pretty much start about $40/hour in a good union. Also, alot of unions are in need of good welders "RIGHT NOW" because alot of the old farts leaving the welding industry and moving on. I basically missed out on the opportunity right after I joined the aerospace industry. If you do become a journeyman, and want to travel, it's a great opportunity see places, don't pay Tax(out of country), and etc. In the end, your retirement plan comes back in a bulk.

I might have to look into that. My friend took some classes at a community college for welding, he got pretty good at it. He already has been offered $28 per hour. Hes only 21 ,so thats pretty good. Plus we live in virginia, prices on everything arent crazy here like in ca
