Default What's the best sub wiring in this scenario?

Alright, let's say you have a 4 ohm, dual voice coil sub, 300W RMS, and you have a 2 channel amp, 250 watts rms at 2 ohms. If it's bridged, it requires 4 ohms or higher, but it can take 2 ohms on each channel. What would be the best course to follow?

Wire the voice coils in parallel as 2 ohms and connect them to one of the channels, leaving the other channel empty.

Wire each voice coil independently to each channel.

Exchange the amp for a mono amp and wire the voice coils as 2 ohm.

Exchange the amp for one with a different rms rating.

One coil to each channel.

You have to wire the coils in series and bridge the amp. If you don't the differences in the channels on the amp could cause the voice coil to come apart if you try to wire it stereo.

If you can get a mono amp stable to 2 ohms.

That would put me at 8 ohms.

Is there anything wrong with using one channel and not the other?

It wouldn't hurt anything but you wouldn't be using the amplifer to it's potential.

Is there a prize for the right answer?

This is just like being in class and the teacher throwing a pop quiz 94

No, I was just trying to be concise.

Thanks.

What amp is it? Your could run each voice coil to the left and right and receive 150watt per channel at 4 ohm. This will get you to the 300 rms of the sub. Make sure the amp is receiveing a mono signal or it will tear itself apart like mention above.

I would get a mono amp and go this route. It will be more efficient and run cooler and draw less power

My friend from NM dropped in for a few days and told me he wants to surprise his wife by putting a system in her WRX STi wagon. So, using my discount, I had to put a setup together. I threw some Infinity components up front with spacers and a dynamat speaker kit. The installation was pretty and clean.

Then I got an Infinity 12 inch dual voice coil sub and a sealed box with exactly the volume called for and a "1000w" kenwood amp. I was looking for a mono 2 ohm amp that could do 300w rms. They didn't have anything, so I settled for a 2 ch amp that does 250watts rms at 2 ohms. Then I found out you can't bridge it at 2 ohms. It has a switch for mono/stereo... I ended up paralleling the voice coils inside the box since the box only had one terminal, and then ran it to one of the channels. If I had known that it would be safe to run one voice coil to each channel, I would have done it that way, but I would have had to put another terminal in the box.

Maybe I'll use the other channel for the front speakers and get rid of his rear speakers when I visit him out there. I have to convince him that with good staging, he wont notice the rear speakers are gone.

He's going to put the Eclipse double din nav in it. Right now it sounds like **** with the factory stereo and LOC. But he cranked the bass way up. I always set the bass to what sounds realistic to me, but for most people, this is a very low setting.

If you run the front speakers on the one channel thats left over you won't have any left or right balence.

OIC you actually want to know, sorry, I thought it was some kind of test.

I agree with wrx-killer-Sti eater get a mono block sub amp, use the 2ch for the front components.
Until then wire each VC to one of the channels on the amp.
I would also warn your friend if he keeps turning up the bass he will over-saturate the amps input stage and shitty SQ will be the least of his problems 94
