Paint?

I would like to know the process you can go through to prevent your paint from chipping from rock chips, peeling and loosing its shine. Im asking this because i will be painting my car soon

I've seen a lot of people tape off their bumpers (looks silly but works) and some companies sell clear vinyl covers for around the wheel wells. Just a start. Anyone else help him out?
