Default Old cell phone, poor-man's vehicle tracking

I have heard before where people have taken an old cell phone (one that you can turn the "Location" option on and not just e911 only, wire it to a source that keeps it charging when the car is on, and hide it in the car. Then supposedly, if the phone hex id and other information about the phone is known, the police can ping the location of the phone once they have authorization from the person filing complaint of a stolen car. even if the phone is not charging, it can stay on for days running off just the phone battery.

Is there any truth to this, if so, any insight?

I tried searching but came up with nothing.

waste of time. Most companies won't do it. Have you ever dealt with your phone company when you have a bill question? Now try it with a company that you don't have a phone bill with. get the point. I called all the big major compaines and they said they will not do it. Some people hear swear that it works. Ie call in a false rape, gun point, kidnape. More trouble in the long run. Look into a unit thats made to do it. http://www.clifford.com

Its up to you, I can only give you advice. I would never recommend it to any of my customers or friends. I kind of laugh at the people that do. Its like play with a gun with the bullets thing. Then when your car does get stolen ( knock on wood) and it does not work you will be thinking dam I should of got the real thing. A well planned out alarm system with many layers would be 100% better then that. This ideal is a false hope
