Default d16a6 problems

So.. i just swapped in a d16 i bought off of a member here. bolted all of my existing parts on there and trew it in. new oil plugs whatever completely redone. so i sit in the car. turn the key twice let my fuel prime then start. i get loud *** backfires and the car struggles to start.

so i let it chill for a bit n noticed the cat was RED so i thought restricted exhaust. checked and it was fine, checked the cat and that was fine everything from the exhaust end of the engine down is ok. checked my gas lines gas filters vacs and all. everything looks damn fine -_- so frustrating.

hoping if anyone ever seen ne thing like this and can point me in the right direction.

as of what i know from the seller - the motor is mint. rebuilt 10k ago. i checked before i did anything and everything looks dandy. what could be causing this? i even unbolted everything from the cat down and started it with headers only and still backfires. im thinking timing but that looks good to. changed the distro with another crx's and same problem even ecu. im stump fellas. ne help is greatly appreciated.

I checked:
fuel lines and fuel systems all the way to each injectors.
vac lines
cables and ground
exhaust and back
head and valves
distro

i mite have left something out...

thanks in advance.

backfiring is caused by timing generally.... but your timing would have to be VERY off for it to be doing that.. you should put your crank pulley at TDC and see where your cam pulley lines up. if everything is lined up, jump the timing plug and use a timing gun to verify that your timing is somewhere close to where it should be. i suspect that with the glowing header that your timing is all the way advanced.. which is bad.

Is your ecu stock? or has it been reprogrammed? and which ecu are you using?

Im shooting for timing problems, i dont think it has to be that far off in order to cause problems.

its a pm6 ecu. as to my knowledge it hasnt been chipped/reprog i even took another pm6 off of a friend's crx. same problems. with his car i switched distro and everything else. i think its timing. hmm i'd need to find someone with a timing gun or that can check.. ne one near by? lol.

I'll forsure check this out asap. ne other ideas? i suspect it was running rich... -_- makes me wonder what the motor had gone trough.

btw at times it would start and run kinda fine except starting out at like 1200 rpm but decreases then i hear backfires every here and there. thats prolly when the cat started to heat up.

it sounds like you have the plug wires in the wrong order in the dist cap..check that it can be an easy mistake that can be over looked ..

that shouldnt have any problems. im running stock exhaust also. just found that the timing had skip a tooth and that one of my injector was stuck on open. im sure its shot. im changing it out today and doin another check up. double checked my distro wires and i had the 3 and 4 wire crossed. seems like its many small issue creater loud gun fires from my exhaust. lol

is this correct guys?
looking at motor from front of car:

Distro from passenger side.

No problem, I see that you found more than one thing wrong at once. Those are the worst to troubleshoot IMO; if you change them both and now it works you'll never know the exact problem. Not that it matters if it works from that point

your distributor wiring order is correct as you posted it. with all those problems found and fixed, ill be surprised if you have not fixed it.

ok so everything is good now except when it starts my rpm flies straight to 3k and slowly eases up as if i was slowly stepping on the trottle. i checked all my vac lines and no leak. i dont think it would be a leak since it slowly increases. can it be a tps? or a sensor? i checked trottle cable as well and it has no tension on it.

Bump^ im going to purge the coolant make sure theres no air in there. if this doesnt work then i might just have to pull off the intake mani and switch sensors with another one i have. any other ideas?

the car starts on a dime but rpm level is high like 3k+ and climbs.. ill prolly double check and switch vac lines also just in case.
