Default What's a good way to check if a tranny is clean?

i recently found a really good deal on an '01 GSR tranny and the last one i bought was complete trash (popped out of 5th, grinded 2nd, etc)

So im looking for some pointers when looking at a transmission like how the input shaft should feel and how the gears should shift. anything is very apreciated.

Open it up if you can. Its just the casing bolts and the snap ring on the mainshaft. (maybe countershaft, don't remember) but its easy. It's hard to tell how it shifts when its out of the car. Even the garbage trannys shift the same when nothings spinning and you're just pushing and pulling on the shift rod. As for shaft play, it should be just a slight movement up and down. Very slight.

And when the tranny pop out of fifth, its usually due to a bad rear mount. Being that fifth gear is not a very load bearing gear, there's hardly any stress put on it. (you hardly use fifth for accelerating)

the rear mount on the tranny was good, it never popped out of any other gear.

also, how do you take the snap rng off of the mainshaft/ countershaft. and which direction should the shaft play be when you mean up and down (rotating back and fourth or pulling in and out)?
