Month-old Accord gets repeated (every 5-7 days) errors on nav screen, "DVD read error, consult Honda dealer". Dealer first said, "Never seen that before" and suggested removing/reinserting DVD. Sure, that'll help -- not. Did it anyway, errors repeated. Yesterday they replaced nav drive so we'll see whether that helps.
Anyone seen such errors, have a guess/clue what the problem is?

I have never heard of such a problem but it doesn't really matter. It's under warranty so they have to fix any issues either way.

Right -- they're doing what they're supposed to do, but they're working blind since they've not seen the problem before. Replacing nav unit was the reasonable thing to do; I just wondered if anyone who'd seen the problem might save us time if the new nav unit doesn't solve the problem. We'll see -- it'll take a month or two without the error for me to be convinced it's really nailed.
Well the Navi drive is pretty much an all inclusive thing. Believe it or not the drive in your trunk also contains the computer for the navigation. So if they are replacing that then I wouldn't think you would have any further issues.

Thanks. While we're discussing the nav unit -- browsing the Honda owners site I saw the offer of updated nav DVDs -- not that I need one yet -- for $185. That's a bit steep in comparison to typical software and data. And, of course, the site warns against using borrowed, discounted, or competitive geographical DVDs. Are these simply relabeled and marked-up commodity disks or is there some added value justifying the price?
that price sounds about right. new disks for my pionner navi (Aftermarket) are right around that price. the only difference your going to find they help are in rapidly growing areas. such as new neighborhoods and strip malls exct....i wouldnt update just yet. wait a few years
I agree. This price is somewhat justified if you think about all that it takes to actually update a navigation disc. I mean, they have people that have to drive all over the country and drive down roads and all this other crazy stuff. This is the standard price for navi updates with pretty much any DVD based unit.

I think that a very few companies actually create mapping databases and license them to GPS manufacturers. So Honda -- charging the big bucks for updates -- isn't actually doing on-the-ground research themselves. The price still may be reasonable, I wondered how it compares to other GPS systems, not factory-installed auto systems. Sounds like the price is in line with what people pay. Though it's way more than, for example, Microsoft's Streets and Trips full-price, not yearly upgrade.

....or just take a satellite picture and coreograph all the long/lat points to the roads on it, which I'm sure the satellite can do already.

either way it costs money to do. so paying $180 isnt bad. im sorry but if you can afford the $2000 (guessing here) price for a factory installed navi systetm, you shouldnt be fretting about $180

Agreed, +2. Since it's the going rate for the nav disk, I won't begrudge it -- either as a fraction of the nav system cost (right, $2000) or the car. It just seemed worth checking...

You could always wait until another upgrade comes out and get the new(er) navi disc on clearance....it wouldn't be super up-to-date, but I guess that how much detail you need depends on how well you know the area.
