Fires.. now... timing

Fires.. now... timing
ok.. its backfiring and throwing soft codes. almost like its running to rich. yet it runs. i got it to about 3k-3500 driving it around and the car started to back fire. I cant figure out why it is doing that... the plugs look like they have been fouled out and are solid black. I am trying to figure out the timing and what not... i just dont know what else to look for....
