Help! Ground controls are stripped!
the locking screw on my GC's are strpped. The groove for the allen wrench is almost totally round now. I can barely grip it. How do I take it out? Can I replace it with a normal screw from the local hardware store? I really need to adjust it. I have really bad negetive camber.
You can replace it with anything that fits the thread pattern. You can get new allen screws if you wanted. Sounds like if you do though, you should get a new wrench while you're at it.
Drill. Smaller diameter tan the threaded area.........replace allen screw with another screw from hardware store of exact same threads per inch.
Oh, I missed the "can't get it out part"... the first thing I'd try is a screw extractor. It's your best shot at not messing something up. Another option might be to try a star-head wrench... sometimes they can get in the corners of a stripped hex-bolt.
Drilling it out would be my last resort... but should work. Just make sure you're careful or you'll mess up the coilover and have to rethread it.

don't use standard (american-sized) allen wrenches on metric allen bolts, and vice-versa. If you don't have the right size tool, check out your local parts store, they should have a set of allen wrenches in metric (I'm assuming the lock bolt on GC's is metric... someone correct me if I'm wrong). You might possibly be able to get it out with the correct metric size if it's been stripped by using a standard size wrench in it.
If you can't get it out that way, you may have to drill it out, as I'm pretty sure there isn't enough room in the little hole to get a pair of vise-grips on the head of that bolt. I'm trying to think of any other ways you could get it out. When I broke the end off of my valve cover bolt, I was actually able to back it out with a small pick and some light taps from a hammer to get it turning the right way so it would unthread.
If you have access to the right tools, you might be able to grind a small tool out of a piece of steel that would fit snug inside the allen bolt head so as to turn it and back it out, but your success with this trick will probably be thwarted if the bolt is in there tight.
Good luck!
