transmission syncro
technically the syncro is composed of the syncro sleeve and hub, blocker rings, keys, and these little springs i forget what they are called exactly. They are moved back and forth by shift forks that are controled by shift linkage. What the syncros do is slow the speed of the freewheeling gear and lock it in place to make it spin the same speed as the shaft it is on. The blocker ring does the actual slowing down of the gear and then the sleeve slides over and then locks onto the dog teeth of the gear, the syncro assembly is splined to the shaft and always spins the same speed as the shaft.

what he said. basically slows the gears down when you shift so they catch right and dont slip or grind

then its not able to slow the "freewheeling" gear down and instead the grinding teeth will slow it down, which will cause other problems.
