Default m2b4 rebuild

hi guys,

I'm rebuilding my transmission at the moment and have come across a few things.

When trying to refit the transmission housing today it refused to slide in easily. It looks like the counter shaft bearing is not sliding in smoothly. Is this common?

Also when I removed the housing the mainshaft bearing stayed in the housing. Is this suppose to happen?

here are some pics:

Get it all centered up. Place a 2x4 on the ground. Pick up the transmission, and tap it on the 2x4 to get the top snap ring to seat.

And yes the bearing stays in the upper housing.

What could help is to warm up the housing. and cool the half with all the gears.

Good luck and TAKE YOUR TIME. i have done my M2b4.

Good luck.

The gap is because you need to spread the snap ring over the bearing in the end of the housing.

the trick to getting the housing completly back together is to set the bellhousing on a couple 2x4s to get the mainshaft off of the ground. then lower the gear housing down slowly keeping it centered until it stops. you will still have a gap at this point, here is the trick: using a wide tipped short prybar, insert it into the opening on the side where the the 3 shift forks are and put it in between the 3 grooves in the shift forks and move them around until the case drops into place. whalla, its that easy.

afterwards, use a large tip flat screwdriver to pry up in the groove of the bearing until the snapring locks into place.

you gotta make sure all the forks are lined up and in the holes right, and then you can take a rubber mallet/dead blow to the top while you hold the snap ring open... def take your time, i cracked my houseing trying to tighten it down before it was on there correctly. Good luck, took me about 2 hours before i finally got it.

no, it definately should not take a mallet or any banging to get the case together. if so, then you are doing something wrong and should take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

the case drops together effortlessly. once you line up the grooves in the shift forks and move them a bit, the case drops together on its own.

a complete rebuild takes less than 1 hr if you know what you are doing. i have rebuilt dozens, so it takes me less than a 1/2 hr.

do yourself a favor and dont bang it together, and once its all done make sure it shifts good before you put it back into the car.

The 5th gear and synchro needed replacing!
