I have a 98 civic with a sohc vtec... anyways ... its been overheating ... the electric fan isnt coming on soon enough... what do I need to do, to fix that? please include details... thanks a lot ~ Jon

IMO it could be two things.
1. Your coolant temperature sensor is bad. It could be making you temp gauge say you are running hot when in reality you are not.

2. Your cooling fan switch is bad. It is the sensor that tells the fan that it is time to cut on. It should be on the engine block somewhere. I am not familiar with the SOHC engines so I couldn't tell you exactly where.

you need to bleed it first and then if the problem continued change the sensor. to bleed it follow the upper radiator hose on the side you will see a nut with a little hole in the center that is where you bleed it use a 10 mm and for the fan sensor follow the lower radiator hose to the eng. @ the end you will see a big brown nut 17mm with a plug that is your sensor, and if replace do the thermostat so you dont have to deal with it later

Awesome advice for a noob, but a little off.

Obd2 Hondas did not come with the little bleeding nipple, so to bleed the system, you have to take the rad cap off, and let the car idle for a while. As it heats up you will see bubbles coming out of the rad neck. Let it do this for about 20 min, then replace the cap. I've delt with this porblem sooo many times, and I doubt any sensors are bad. Bleed it, then let us know if you're still haveing troubles.

 

Does your car cool off if you get on a highway?

 

ya it does... its just like I live in Hollywood so theres a lot of stop n go traffic...so i dunno will bleedin help it from overheating or what...?

 

If you have a low coolant level and air pockets in your system it is possible that topping off your coolant and bleeding your system like 93eg2james said could fix your problem.

These might be some dumb questions. Have you checked for any leaks? Have you checked your coolant level?

 

umm theres no coolant leaks and the coolant level is full... so i dunno... i thought it was the fan but I dunno...

*edit* you might want to go to your local parts store to get a repair manual for your car before you try any wireing of the fan motor just in case Honda changed anything between 94 and 98.
