Default clutch slips when cruising?

my friend said that his RPM's jump sometimes when cruising on the freeway. So i took a ride with him and while he was cruising in 5th gear, the RPM's jumped all of sudden, as if it were neutral, but went back to normal when he took his foot off the gas.

The tranny didnt pop out of gear or anything, so I'm just wondering if could be the clutch, because i do know that it's worn out.

Any ideas?

Yes, it sounds as if it could be the symptoms of a slipping clutch.

check to see if there are any fluids on the ground underneath the tranny after the car has set for awhile. one problem i recently had was that my main seal was leaking and oil soaked my clutch disk. my rpm's went up to 4-5k when i was only doing 40-50mph. the more i gased, the higher the rpm got but the car wasn't really acceleration. but all in all it is slipping.
