now im checking the gap on my OS type s piston rings. as what the helms says i should be getting a gap of .025. well my oem rings are labeled r1 and r2 being the first top rings. and on all 4 of my r2 rings im getting .025 but on the 4 r1 rings the gap is smaller. according to c-speed it says if it is smaller i need to gap them. after doing some search i've seen some people say that i need to file them down.
i just wanted to make sure if having the r1 rings smaller was normal or if i do in fact need to file them down to .025 as well. anyone know if autozone offers this ring filer to rent or if anyone has any tips/tricks/or proper methods to filing down to accurate measurements. or is filing just trial and error and i can use maybe a nail filer.
ok so i did some more research and i see that i might have to do some filing, but is the file tool necessary? how come i couldnt just use a nail file or a dremel?

just go by what the helms says, if the ring gap is smaller than what the helms wants then yes definately file it. make sure to go in very small increments , its very easy to take too much off. Also I have never needed a ring expander I always just get them on gently by hand.
I don't remember off hand what my measurements were when comparing the first and second compression ring..
