New distributor on but runs real funky.....
I got a new dizzy on and the wires in the right firing order from the dizzy to the spark plugs. It starts up just fine but it sounds like it is puttering almost like a go cart. The car speeds up really slow in first and every gear the more gas I use the louder the sound. What could I have done wrong or what do I need to check? I have been told to check the timing....how do I do so?
you can rotate the dizzy forward and back to change the timing a little bit. Just loosen the bolts and get it to a point where it idles good and you're fine
timing might be off. to check timing, get timing gun, hook up pwr and ground, clamp the conductor wire to the #1 spark plug wire. start up car let it warm, and then pull trigger and point it at your crank pulley, there should be a line indicating where to aim it and look on the plastic right above the crank pulley. okay, now look for 3 marks very close to each other. if that line on the plastic above the crank pulley doesn't match up to any of these lines, then your timing is off and you need to adjust it so that it does match up. so loosen the 3 dizzy screws (don't take off) and rotate towards the front or the back depending on where it lines up on the crank pulley. when you got it lined up, tighten the dizzy just the way you adjusted it and bam, you've just adjusted your timing. if that doesnt solve it then hmm ??
Since the dizzy I bought was used you think maybe replace the distributor cap and rotor might do the trick? I adjusted the ignition timing which was just about 6% off so it needed to be done but didnt fix my problem.....
